You’ll have a passion for health and safety, and be proactive in finding ways to improve safety procedures in the workplace. You’ll plan your work carefully, and be a great communicator to help others understand safety plans and safe working practices.
Health and safety officers often work across multiple projects and areas of operation within their organisation. You’ll usually work in an office, but at times you may visit project sites and facilities. You may participate in field work including surveys, studies, monitoring, and regular inspections and audits. You can find work as a health and safety adviser all around Australia. Most jobs are in cities and towns. You may also visit and spend time in remote locations.
To be a health and safety adviser you typically need a Certificate IV – Occupational Health and Safety. You may also require qualifications in training and assessment, as well as drug and alcohol testing. The rail industry has stringent health and safety standards. You’ll be required to complete industry-specific safety training and understand legal requirements for safety in rail. Our industry values diverse personal and work experience. Many employers can provide you with opportunities to gain new qualifications and industry experience to help you succeed.
