Job Description - Junior Payroll Officer

What you will do:

In this role, you will assist the Payroll Team Leader and the broader team to ensure accurate and timely payroll processing. This involves supporting weekly payments for employees and verifying their accuracy. You will also assist with compliance obligations related to third-party payments and help manage inquiries from employees and stakeholders.

Responsibilities:

  • Data entry for new starters, employee changes and terminations

  • Supporting end-to-end weekly payroll processing within a team environment using the Preceda payroll system

  • Review of the Time & Attendance data feed

  • Leave calculations including parental, long service, annual, sick & workers comp etc.

  • Assist with month end and year end tasks

  • Award interpretation support

  • Rotate around to different payrolls to cover absences

  • Assisting with payroll queries and enquiries as required through our payroll ticketing system (JIRA) or by email/phone

  • Assist with reconciliation of payrolls on a monthly and rolling YTD basis

  • Assist with the reconciliation of superannuation and payroll tax

  • Be involved in the EOM/EOFY processes per timetable

  • Constant review of payroll processes and procedures, ensuring operational excellence of the payroll department

Key Experience & Competencies:

  • 1–2 years’ experience in a payroll position (high-volume experience is ideal)

  • Prior experience using Preceda and/or Workday Payroll software (highly regarded but not essential)

  • Great attention to detail

  • Experience in a complex, dynamic business with multiple sites across Australia (advantageous)

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

  • Foundational knowledge of payroll and tax legislation, ideally EBAs and Awards

  • Strong analytical, reporting, and problem-solving skills

  • A certificate or diploma in Payroll would be highly regarded

  • Intermediate Excel skills using formulas (Pivot tables advantageous)
