Propellants Lab Technician - Propellant Manufacture, Casting, Testing, and Data Analysis

YTEK is an independent Australian engineering and technology development organization supporting Australian Defence R&D. Due to ongoing and growing services demand from our Defence Energetics Support Group in Adelaide YTEK requires a suitably qualified Practitioner to join its ranks.

The Role: Propulsion Propellant Materials Lab Technical Officer. As part of an existing team the incumbent will provide technical and practical lab support to complement the expertise and capabilities within the Missile and Space Propulsion group for the investigation, development and characterisation of rocket propellant solutions in support of the Advanced Rocket Motor Technology Demonstration (ARMTD) program.

Some of the tasks associated with this role include:

  • Manufacturing and casting of propellant formulations
  • Laboratory testing on a range of propellant formulations to characterise chemical and mechanical properties
  • Test data analysis
  • Preparation of hardware and materials for manufacture and testing
  • Provision of assistance in the development of test methodologies
  • Assistance with experimental design and instrumentation

The Candidates: We are looking for a suitably qualified, responsible Lab Technician or Tertiary qualified persons with a high level of initiative and self motivation who are suited to the following requirements. 

Prerequisite qualifications: Formal training in technical aspects of relevant laboratory work and, in particular, the safe handling of hazardous materials and/or chemicals or Equivalent or Higher Qualifications

Highly Desirable knowledge, skills and/or experience:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the manufacture and/or casting of propellant formulations
  • Demonstrated ability, track record and commitment to follow safe chemical working practices in a laboratory environment
  • Demonstrated experience in safe energetic materials handling is desirable but not essential

Desirable knowledge, skills and/or experience:

  • Demonstrated ability to assist in the development of test methods
  • Demonstrated experience in energetic material sample preparation techniques for chemical and physical testing

Other desirable attributes:

  • A background in chemistry and/or some mechanical engineering knowledge, such as in additive manufacturing or casting techniques and/or testing of propellants would suit
  • This role requires the incumbent to hold Australian Defence Security Clearance. Australian Citizenship is essential and a previous or current Australian Security Clearance would be highly regarded and would put you ahead of the queue.

The work will be based in the northern suburbs of Adelaide.
