Job Description - Laboratory Technician

Our Technical Services team in Bayswater, Melbourne plays a critical role in supporting food and dairy customers through high‑quality laboratory testing, technical expertise, and global collaboration.
We are now looking for a Laboratory Technician to join our microbiology and analytical support team, contributing to reliable results, strong customer support, and continuous improvement in a regulated laboratory environment.

The Role & Your Impact

As a Laboratory Technician, you will provide comprehensive laboratory testing and technical support across microbiology, phage testing, dairy and food analysis, and general laboratory operations. Your work will directly support customer projects, product quality, and food safety while ensuring compliance with Novonesis quality and biosecurity standards.
Key responsibilities include:
  • Performing microbiological testing, including enumeration of bacteria, yeast, and mould
  • Conducting dairy and cheese analysis, including compositional monitoring
  • Carrying out chemical and physical testing on customer and internal samples
  • Preparing samples, reagents, and microbiological media
  • Maintaining laboratory SOPs, documentation, and accurate result reporting
  • Supporting technical service projects and customer‑related testing
  • Ensuring compliance with FSMS, quality, safety, and biosecurity requirements
  • Supporting phage testing, monitoring, and global technical collaboration
  • Maintaining laboratory housekeeping, equipment calibration, and stock control
  • Contributing to workflow efficiency, audits, and continuous improvement initiatives

What You’ll Need to Be Successful

  • Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Food Science (microbiology focus), or a related science discipline
  • Minimum 3–4 years of laboratory experience in food microbiology or a related environment
  • Strong knowledge of microbiology techniques and laboratory best practices
  • High attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy and documentation
  • Understanding of laboratory quality systems and food safety standards
  • Ability to work flexibly across multiple laboratory functions
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative team mindset
  • Proficiency in MS Office for documentation and reporting
