About the Role

We are currently seeking a motivated and highly experienced engineering manager to join the Western Australia (WA) Asset Projects team. The role will help build and develop the projects team to deliver the WA growth and sustaining program.


The team is responsible for managing engineering across all BHP’s mines and port projects. These are large, challenging, multi-disciplinary and diverse projects, including crushing, conveying, screening, balance machines (stackers & reclaimers), car dumpers, ship loaders and train load-outs. Reporting to the Area Lead Engineering for materials handling, your focus is to lead, enable and coach your team to ensure engineering designs are optimised and enable safe and efficient construction, commissioning, and operation. In consultation with a wide range of stakeholders, you will define project requirements and develop engineering strategies, plans and solutions to meet project objectives.

Your key accountabilities include:

  • Working closely within a high performing cross functional team (studies, delivery, commissioning, operational readiness and project services) to provide engineering guidance and support from project inception to closeout.
  • Overall accountability for the engineering of your team’s projects.
  • Developing project specific engineering strategies and plans, key engineering framing documentation and supporting the tender process for engineering services.
  • Manage and govern tier 1 engineering consultants to ensure design and performance is in accordance with BHP processes and project requirements.
  • Proactively leads and champions engineering value, safety and sustainability throughout all project stages whilst adhering to BHP technical standards.
  • Employs specific/relevant engineering expertise and leadership to meet BHP’s technical, schedule and budget expectations.
  • Determines the underlying cause of problems and evaluates multiple solutions to ensure a planned and structured approach to solving complex problems.
  • Identifies, engages, and manages a range of diverse internal and external stakeholders.
  • Identifies and assesses risks, makes risk informed decisions, uses BHP's risk management framework, and builds a risk aware culture to support safe and productive performance outcomes.
  • Prioritizes work effort and resources accordingly.
  • Engages the capabilities of the entire organization.
  • Strives to achieve 100% safety, 100% customer value and 0% waste

About You

As a successful candidate you will possess the following:

  • Demonstrated relevant engineering management and governance experience in large, complex brownfield materials handling projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence within diverse high performing teams.
  • Significant multi-disciplinary technical proficiency across a broad range of engineering (project) including operations and maintenance.
  • Strong strategic, influencing and change management delivery, coupled with technical communications knowledge and skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Relationship management capability inclusive of successfully influencing and leading change in a challenging and complex environment.
  • Previous experience in a leadership role, or at minimum demonstrated leadership capability through short term or project opportunities .
  • Degree in Engineering, with strong understanding of Engineering principles and processes.
  • Strong commercial acumen as well as managing risk and governance for successful delivery of projects safely, on time and on budget.

Location

You will be based in Perth, Western Australia, in the multi award winning office tower - ‘City Square’. You will have stunning river views from your modern open plan office, state of the art facilities including virtual whiteboards and video conferencing facilities, 550 bicycle racks with ample lockers, showers and change room amenities and a large outdoor terrace with barbecues.  You will be working on Monday-Friday roster. Flexible work is also offered. Some site travel may be required (very limited).
