Job Description - Lecturer, Indigenous Social Equity and Leadership - Expression of Interest

The University of Melbourne is inviting Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander candidates to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) for a lecturer, Indigenous Social Equity and Leadership position on a full-time continuing basis.

This opportunity is offered at Academic Level B, with a salary range of $124,656–$148,023 per annum, plus 17% superannuation.

Only Indigenous Australians are eligible to apply as this position is exempt under the Special Measure Provision, Section 12 (1) of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 (Vic).

Your next career opportunity:
You will design, teach and assess postgraduate subjects in Social Change Leadership for diverse experienced Fellows. You will advance research on Indigenous social change while supporting Fellows’ community-led projects and long-term leadership journeys. You will collaborate across the University and global Atlantic Fellows network to grow your academic and impact profile.

What you will deliver:

  • Design, deliver and coordinate engaging postgraduate subjects, using culturally grounded, flexible teaching approaches for adult learners.
  • Supervise and support Fellows to develop rigorous social change project proposals with strong community partnerships and ethical foundations.
  • Conduct and publish high-quality research on Indigenous social change and leadership, securing external funding where appropriate.
  • Contribute to AFSE’s research, seminars and public engagement, representing AFSE locally, nationally and internationally.
  • Build and sustain collaborations with Indigenous communities, partners and University colleagues to strengthen AFSE’s teaching and impact.

You may be a great fit if you:

  • Hold a doctoral qualification, or be near completion, in a field related to Indigenous social change.
  • Demonstrate experience co-designing curriculum that embeds Indigenous knowledges, cultural safety principles and decolonial teaching practices.
  • Show a strong record, or clear potential, in research, publication and collaborative project development.
  • Exhibit excellence in teaching adult learners, including experienced leaders, using inclusive and reflexive pedagogical approaches.
  • Work effectively within small, interdisciplinary teams, contributing constructively to programme development and shared strategic priorities.
  • Engage confidently with Indigenous communities and partners, nurturing ethical, long-term relationships that support social change.

Your new team: Atlantic Fellows for Social Equity

You will join the Atlantic Fellows for Social Equity, a collaborative programme advancing Indigenous and Pacific-led social change. AFSE combines a rich Foundation year of fellowship and postgraduate study while nurturing a lifelong community of senior Fellows. The team works closely with communities, partners and a global Atlantic Fellows network to amplify impact. You will collaborate with committed colleagues across the University, including the Faculty of Education, benefiting from strong mentoring and development opportunities.
