Job Description - Marine & Nature Guide | Outback Spirit Tours

Be a part of sharing special places and shaping lasting memories with Australia’s leading experiential tourism business.

ABOUT US:

Outback Spirit Tours offers a range of unique adventure tours and luxury short stays across our beautiful country. Our adventures capture the very essence of Australia, from the rugged red cliffs of the Kimberley to the unspoiled natural wonder of Tasmania, we bring iconic experiences to life. We operate 8 lodges in some of the most remote, inaccessible and beautiful locations. Our team of guides, drivers, camp and operations staff are passionate about the outdoors and take pride in bringing our guests on the adventure of a lifetime.

Australia’s leading experiential tourism group, Journey Beyond, is privileged to operate 20 brands spanning the country and New Zealand, connecting guests to the land, and to each other.

Joining the Journey Beyond family, you will play an integral role in supporting our business as we continue to share special places and shape lasting memories for our guests.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

We are seeking experienced and passionate Marine & Nature Guides to join our team across a selection of our iconic remote Lodges and Camps.

Our operations are world-class, delivering exceptional guest experiences while maintaining the highest standards of safety, service, and professionalism. As a Marine & Nature Guide, your focus will be on creating memorable, high-quality experiences through safe, engaging, and informative tours.

Depending on location, the role may include river and sea tours, guided fishing experiences, and on-land nature or cultural walks, often involving transporting guests by vessel before leading guided experiences on foot.

Some positions commence in February, with most starting in April. The majority of Lodges and Camps operate until September, with select locations extending through to November.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver safe, engaging marine, land-based, and fishing tours (where applicable) for guests of all experience levels.
  • Create warm, professional guest interactions from arrival through to departure.
  • Share knowledge of native flora, fauna, ecosystems, wildlife, and the cultural significance of land and sea.
  • Collaborate with Indigenous guides and local partners where applicable.
  • Safely operate vessels and vehicles to transport guests to and from tour locations.
  • Maintain a strong focus on safety, risk awareness, and emergency response, including first aid when required.
  • Maintain vessels, vehicles, and equipment to a high standard of cleanliness, presentation, and operational readiness.
  • Assist with lodge or camp operations during non-tour periods, including general maintenance and support duties.

ABOUT YOU:

You are an adaptable, guest-focused guide who enjoys working in remote environments and delivering meaningful experiences. You are confident both on the water and on land, and you take pride in sharing knowledge that brings landscapes, wildlife, and culture to life.

You will ideally have:

  • Experience guiding marine, nature-based, and/or fishing tours in remote or wilderness settings.
  • Strong communication and storytelling skills, with the ability to tailor experiences to different guests.
  • A high level of environmental and cultural awareness, including respect for Indigenous culture and Country.
  • A strong safety mindset and the ability to remain calm and professional in dynamic situations.
  • Confidence operating vessels and/or vehicles and working as part of a small, close-knit team.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Coxswain Licence
  • Approved NT Operator’s Licence *(required for some locations)*
  • Remote First Aid Certificate
  • Medium or Heavy Rigid Driver’s Licence
  • Passenger Driver Authority

REMOTE LIVING

All Lodges and Camps are located in some of Australia’s most remote regions. Many are accessible only by air, with staff flown from Darwin via our private aviation network. You will live and work onsite for the duration of the season, with limited connectivity and access to towns.

While remote living presents challenges, it offers a rare opportunity to disconnect, immerse yourself in nature, and experience Australia’s landscapes in a deeply rewarding way.

WHAT WE OFFER

  • Fully provided accommodation and meals for the season
  • A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to live and work in remote wilderness locations
  • A supportive, close-knit team environment
  • An unforgettable lifestyle experience
  • Discounts across Journey Beyond travel, experiences, and merchandise
  • Employee Assistance Program, private health discounts, and referral incentives
