Mechanical Engineer

What are some example projects or experiences?

Mechanical engineers design and build the machines that make up and support our rail network. This includes our freight trains, which are some of the largest in the world. It also includes the machines that are used to maintain and repair them. A mechanical engineer could be responsible for maintaining an entire fleet of locomotives, so they must have strong technical and time management skills. They understand best practice standards and may need to monitor and report on fleet performance.

What is the work environment like?

You’ll work in a team of engineers and skilled tradespeople. You might work in an office, designing the next generation of passenger trains. Or you could be on a construction site helping to install new infrastructure. You can find work as a mechanical engineer all around Australia. Most jobs are in cities and towns. Some are in remote areas.
