Medical Specialist - Paediatric, Adolescent & Young Adult Oncologist


This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic, multidisciplinary team committed to improving the outcomes for adolescents and young adults with cancer. The Paediatric and AYA Oncologist will provide specialist care  for patients under the age of 39 by supporting the tumour stream management of sarcoma as well as cases requiring paediatric expertise within the adult sector. The position will also have the opportunity to support other AYA initiatives including the paediatric-adult transition project and broader organisational approaches to deliver developmentally appropriate care.

Position Summary

Selection Criteria












Essential Requirements •    Specialist medical registration with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency
•    Fellowship qualifications with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in medical oncology or equivalent 
•    Demonstrated knowledge, training, and experience in adolescent and young adult (AYA) oncology with proven competence in addressing both the medical and psychosocial complexities of care
•    Experience collaborating within multidisciplinary teams and working in hospital or specialist health service settings. 
•    Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including experience providing education or consultation to staff, patients, and families.
•    Commitment to quality improvement, service development, and research participation.
•    Experience in participating in clinical research
Desirable Requirements •    Knowledge of health service systems, electronic medical records (e.g., EPIC), and clinical governance frameworks.
•    Experience in designing or contributing to audits or quality improvement projects.
•    Post graduate qualifications (eg PhD) and/or academic profile demonstrated through 1st author peer reviewed publications and conference presentations

Provision of Care

•    Deliver high quality, evidenced based clinical care to adolescents and young adults with sarcoma, managing their diagnosis, treatment and follow up effectively


•    Support the integration of paediatric/AYA oncology principles into the broader model of care within the Sarcoma MDT. 
•    Actively promote and enrol patients onto clinical trials for AYA sarcoma
•    Provide leadership in paediatric expertise within the adult sector (inclusive of Wilms tumour and Neuroblastoma) 
•    Attend and actively participate in relevant tumour stream multidisciplinary meetings (MDM) including the AYA MDM and RCH solid MDM  
•    Provide specialist advice to clinical staff on complexities related to AYA cancer.
•    Support the care of AYA through involvement in the AYA-Paediatric-Adult Collaborative Transition Project and other survivorship activities 
•    Support collaborative efforts between the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and the paediatric sector to align care pathways, including location of care, clinical trials, transition planning, and long-term follow-up for AYA

 


Clinical leadership and care for AYA patients requiring paediatric expertise within the adult sector

•    Provide comprehensive adolescent health assessments for patients under the age of 18 within Peter Mac 


•    Provide guidance and education to multidisciplinary tumour stream teams to ensure the safe provision of adolescent-specific care within their broader cancer diagnosis and treatment.
•    Offer education and guidance to both adolescents and their families, addressing concerns around treatment, psychosocial concerns and long-term health outcomes.
•    Support the development of a consultation liaison service for the AYA program to ensure adolescents receive comprehensive, developmentally appropriate care integrated within existing adult tumour streams.
•    Provide support for implementing paediatric precision oncology programs and their adoption into the adult sector
•    Represent paediatric oncology within the Victorian AYA Cancer Service and broader state and national forums as required.

Innovation and Research in AYA Oncology 

•    Actively contributes to the advancement of AYA oncology services at Peter Mac, aligning with the strategic priorities of both the service and organisation
•    Establish and maintain strong working relationships with key clinicians at both RCH and Peter Mac to foster precinct collaboration 
•    Contribute to service innovation and quality improvement, identifying gaps in care and implementing strategies to enhance clinical outcomes and patient experience. 
•    Foster research and innovation in AYA oncology through active engagement in clinical trials, collaborative research, and initiatives that enhance scientific understanding 
•    Actively contributes to the development and delivery of a Parkville AYA Cancer program


 


Education & Training

•    Provide mentorship and supervision to Fellows, oncology registrars and residents
•    Build capacity among adult sector clinicians in AYA oncology through teaching, consultation and knowledge sharing
•    Participate in hospital wide interdisciplinary educational programs,  to promote best practice in AYA care
