About the Board

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (Reef Authority) is a non-corporate Commonwealth entity and operates as a statutory agency under the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act 1975 (the Marine Park Act). The Reef Authority sits within the Australian Government Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water Portfolio and reports to the Minister for the Environment and Water.

Membership of Reef Authority is established under the Marine Park Act and comprises a Chairperson, Chief Executive Officer and 5 members including a First Nations person, a member with significant tourism knowledge or experience, and a nominee from the Queensland Government.

Eligibility & Appointment Terms

The Reef Authority First Nations Member must be a First Nations person with significant knowledge or experience of First Nations matters relating to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

The position is a part-time statutory appointment for a fixed term of up to five years. The position is eligible for reappointment.

The appointment will be made by the Governor-General, on the recommendation of the Minister for the Environment and Water, following a merit-based selection process.

Desired skills and attributes

  • Experience in public sector governance and regulatory processes.
  • Strong scenario planning, risk management and strategic management skills.
  • Understanding of government legislation/legislative processes and knowledge of public policy direction.
  • Strong skills in collaboration, engagement and public speaking.
  • Ability to provide guidance and oversight of the Reef as a national asset.
  • Provide geographic perspectives (Queensland).
  • Recognised for your integrity, high ethical standards and ability to impartially consider all sides.
  • Commitment to finding common ground in implementation of actions for the benefit of the Great Barrier Reef.
  • Willingness and ability to devote time and energy to the role and are committed, trusted and loyal to your role.
  • Ability and willingness to challenge decisions and probe for further information.
