With continual growth and diversification, we are currently seeking for a Naval Architect to join our Henderson office. As the Naval Architect you will be responsible for engineering analysis and design, identification and reduction of technical risk, supporting both bid responses and project production activities.

As the Naval Architect you will have excellent communication skills, that will enable you to create and maintain a good working relationship with all teams across the design production and project delivery. You will also be responsible for concept and detailed Naval Architecture design of ship structures up to 150m in length.  Input into key engineering design decisions, mentoring of junior Naval Architects and provision of technical guidance on ship build production process.   

Key Accountabilities:

• Naval Architecture – Stability, Structural Analysis, Resistance and Powering. 
• Contributing, participating and where appropriate leading a structural team through the ship build design process from requirements definition and review, preliminary and detailed design, production implementation and sea trials.  
• Review and approval of engineering design packages, within delegated engineering authority.
• Weight tracking & control.
• CAD Drawings.
• Customer liaison and internal design meetings and reporting. 
• Mentoring Junior Naval Architects and Engineers. 
• Development of QA documentation.
• Proactively promoting quality, environmental responsibility & safety within the workplace, encouraging an outcome of Birdon being a place of work by choice.
• Actively participating in the continued growth of the business.

Essential

• Tertiary qualifications at degree level in Naval Architecture.
• Highly proficient in CAD programs, efficient technical drawing and drafting skills.
• Proactive manner demonstrating strong technical aptitude and interpersonal skills.
•  Highly Proficient in Microsoft Office software.
•  Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions, identify work priorities in a constantly changing environment. 
• Previous experience building capability and systems in a team and a developing organisation. 
• Experience in steel & aluminum design.

Desirable

• Chartered Professional Engineering status in relevant discipline or eligibility to apply. 
• Marine or Mechanical focus specific degrees desirable. 
• Knowledge of marine engineering and design principles, systems, techniques, and industry standards. Experience in Defence contracting preferred. 
• Ability to develop technical documents, technical manuals, and drawings.
• Understanding of military and government project documentation standards.  
• Experience in International Class Societies.
