Orderly

What You’ll Do (Key Responsibilities)

• Movement of patients using bed, barouche (trolley), wheelchair or occasionally on foot and assist with pre-operative patient shaving/clipping.

• As part of a team, assist in transferring of patients between any mode of transport 

• Perform movements as a member of a pool of orderlies or as a dedicated resource to a department 

• Under direction assist with the turning / repositioning of patients 

• Conduct safety checks on equipment prior to any transport being used 

• Perform correct and exact identification of patients where that is not conducted to the orderly’s satisfaction by others as to the patient’s correct identity and according to hospital policy and the orderly service’s standard operating procedure 

• Safe movement of patients, treating them always will respect and dignity both in their method of operation and when communicating with them 

• Perform tasks with an appropriate attitude to clinical staff 

• Transport patients who may be clinically unstable, or require oxygen or ongoing acute treatment with assisted by a clinical staff escort 

• Where portable oxygen has been requested, that the portable oxygen has enough supply available and is operational 

• Provide all services strictly in accordance with policies, procedures and/or standard operating procedures 

• Upon authorised direction, perform any movement of deceased patients in a respectful and appropriate manner according to their religious beliefs 

• Carry out mortuary related transfer of deceased and complete necessary documentation outside of normal mortuary operating hour 

• Respond to all electronic data or voice communications received through their hand-held communication device without delay

Skills and Knowledge

Previous experience within healthcare/ hospital environment is desirable 

• Previous experience in an Orderly Service or similar position is desirable Skills & Knowledge

 •Strong communication, interpersonal skills and strong initiative 

• Displays competency in the reading and writing of English to enable required duties to be performed safely and to acceptable levels 

• Sound time management and organisational skills 

• An understanding of support services
