Job Description - Outdoor Education Teacher - Mallana

Wesley College Melbourne, a school of the Uniting Church, established in 1866, is one of Australia's leading and most respected co-educational independent schools.  With an enrolment of 3,400 students from ECLC to Year 12, it comprises three metropolitan campuses in Melbourne, at St Kilda Road, Glen Waverley and Elsternwick, outdoor education sites at Chum Creek, Mallana, Lochend and a Year 9 residential campus at Clunes. In addition to the Melbourne based campuses, Wesley College offers a remarkable sequence of outdoor experiences that we carefully layer into our school program from Years 3 to 10 on three Outdoor Education sites: Chum Creek (Healesville), Camp Mallana (Paynesville) and Lochend (Portland). We have an exciting opportunity for an Outdoor Education Teacher to join us at Camp Mallana for Term 3 from 15 July 2024 to 20 September 2024, for a full-time temporary contract (leave replacement). Camp Mallana is located on the Gippsland lakes, near Bairnsdale, and provides Outdoor Education programs for Years 6 and Year 10 students from Wesley College city campuses. Programs offer five to six-day camps, using activities such as sailing, sea kayaking, bike touring, hiking and camping. The Outdoor Education Teacher and Head of Program share the running of the campsite, implementing camp programs, and providing leadership and supervision of the Outdoor Education Instructor and two trainee staff. The role is one which requires initiative, energy, enthusiasm, and the ability to work with, and alongside other dedicated professionals. The Outdoor Education Teacher is required to work with the Head of Program to plan and implement all outdoor education activities associated with the annual camp for each home room group and to manage the operation of the campsite. The Outdoor Education program aims to link students to the natural world, through: * The use of vivid landscapes. * Teaching basic outdoor skills. * Encouraging environmental awareness and action. In making this appointment, the College is seeking applicants who, among other qualities, can demonstrate: * Sea Kayak Instructor qualification required.. * A current Victorian Institute of Teaching registration (which incorporates Working With Children Check and National Police Checks) is an essential requirement for this role. * To lead a team of Outdoor Education Instructors and Trainees to impart a high-quality programme for the students in the camp. * Qualification and instruction in outdoor pursuits according to accepted procedures that ensure a safe programme of educational activities. * Ensuring safety procedures and contingency plans are in place and that staff and students are familiar with procedures in the event of accidents and emergencies. * Experience in a similar role is highly desirable.
