What is the role?

Payroll Services sits within the Business Services branch, which is a multifaceted branch within the Chief Financial Officer Command.  Payroll Services delivers fortnightly pays to over approximately 8,500 employees using SAP. We have a complex and fast-paced operating environment, which means that there is never a dull day and always something new to learn.

Working in Payroll Services is an important contribution to the frontline endeavours of the AFP that leaves a positive impact on our members. You will learn more about the exciting work that the AFP does in Australia and overseas to deliver on our mission to protect Australians and Australia's interests.

As a member of Payroll Services, you will administer employment conditions and service entitlements for AFP employees including processing of pay, leave and superannuation. This team supports the delivery of payroll services to AFP employees by processing payroll transactions, providing advice on pay related matters and monitoring areas of risk.

What will you do?

There are positions at two different band levels considered as part of this process within Payroll Services. Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Payroll Team Member - Band 4

• Day to day payroll processing, including calculation of employee entitlements to strict deadlines.


• Undertaking general administrative duties associated with the provision of payroll services to the agency.


• Interpreting and providing information on staff related entitlements and conditions of service in line with the Enterprise Agreement and related legislation, policies and procedures.


• Communicating outcomes in line with AFP's Enterprise Agreement and related legislation, policies and procedures.


• Working collaboratively with your team to deliver high quality payroll service.


• Participating as a constructive team member to deliver ongoing improvements, quality of service and professional practices and standard.


• Contributing to a positive and energetic team culture.


• Further develop subject matter expertise through ongoing development and learning opportunities.

Payroll Senior Team Member - Band 5

• In addition to the Band 4 responsibilities.


• Undertake payroll processing, including review, process and advise on complex payroll cases.


• Mentoring, developing and supporting team members to contribute to a positive and energetic team culture.


• Contribute to issue resolution and innovation.


• Influence and implement business improvements related to payroll practices, procedures and guidelines.


• Maintaining currency in subject matter expertise through on-going professional development and learning opportunities.

Essential Requirements

Essential Requirements (Band 4 and Band 5)

• You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application.


• A Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one.

Essential Requirements (Band 4)

• Contemporary Payroll, Superannuation, Human Resources, Corporate and/or Finance experience.

Essential Requirements (Band 5)

• A minimum of 2 years contemporary Payroll, Superannuation, Human Resources experience.


• Experience with Payroll Systems such as SAP or similar.


• Understanding of payroll frameworks, policies and legislation.

Desirable Requirements

Desirable Requirements (Band 4)

• Experience with Payroll Systems such as SAP or similar.


• Application of payroll frameworks, policies and legislation.

Desirable Requirements (Band 5)

• Payroll project experience.


• Experience in mentoring and/or training members.


• Experience in interpreting and addressing complex payroll matters.

Additional Information

• These roles are AFP Band 4 and AFP Band 5 level

• This role is located in ACT and applicants are expected to be based in ACT or relocate at own expense.
