Your next career opportunity 
As the Placement Subject Coordinator for the Master of Counselling, you will play a pivotal role in launching a groundbreaking online programme. You will have the opportunity to design and deliver innovative placement subjects, collaborate with a dynamic team, and contribute to the development of future counselling professionals. This role offers a unique chance to impact the field of counselling education and foster meaningful partnerships with industry leaders.

Your responsibilities will include: 

• Lead Curriculum Development: Design and develop placement subjects, ensuring alignment with accreditation standards and professional practice integration.
• Coordinate Student Placements: Facilitate placement preparation, deliver orientation workshops, and provide ongoing support and mentorship to students as well as coordinating and teaching into placement subjects. 
• Build Strategic Partnerships: Establish and maintain relationships with counselling agencies, community services, and health providers for placement opportunities.
• Ensure Compliance: Adhere to academic policies and procedures, including assessment design, marking, and plagiarism prevention.

You may be a great fit if: 

You will bring a wealth of experience in coordinating university-level field placements, with a strong background in counselling, social work, or psychology, and a commitment to delivering high-quality educational experiences.

You may also: 

• Possess a relevant qualification in counselling, social work, psychology, or a closely related discipline.
• Have experience in coordinating or supervising university-level field placement programmes.
• Demonstrate strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise work within tight deadlines.
• Be committed to equity, diversity, inclusion, and reconciliation within the university environment.
• Have a proven track record in developing and maintaining relationships with community organisations and health providers.

Your new team – Department of Social Work, School of Health Sciences

In July 2009, Social Work became a Department of the School of Health Sciences, in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. Social Work was established at The University of Melbourne in 1940 and continues to be one of the leading departments in the Asia-Pacific region.

Social Work has a significant research profile and close local and national links with key human service agencies in the government and non-government sectors, social work professional bodies and other major social work schools internationally.

Since 2008, Social Work has been offering a qualifying Master of Social Work Degree as well as several specialist Masters post-qualifying courses. In 2016, in a new development for the Department, it began offering online post-qualifying courses including the Master of Advanced Social Work and the Master of Health and Human Services. The Department also offers the Master of Narrative Therapy and Community Work in collaboration with The Dulwich Centre, Adelaide. Social Work also has a long standing, strong and vibrant PhD program focused on training future leaders in the profession and academia. The Master of Counselling is a new degree to be offered as part of Melbourne Online from 2026.

The Department of Social Work is located within the School of Health Sciences, along with the Departments of Audiology and Speech Pathology, Nursing, Optometry & Vision Sciences, and Physiotherapy.
