Job Description - Preschool Diploma Educator (Casual) - Room for Advancement

We are looking to hire an analytical Preschool Diploma Educator (Casual) to join our energetic team at Mungabareena Aboriginal Corporation in Wodonga, Yarra Valley & High Country VIC.

About the role:

At Koori First Steps, this role goes beyond in that it's about working with our team of dedicated educators, learning about, and celebrating Aboriginal culture and being a valued, active member of the wider Mungabareena Aboriginal Corporation family. You will use your skills in language development, social and emotional wellbeing, and understanding of access and inclusion to contribute to the self-determination and fulfillment of our Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children and families. You will promote and endorse culturally sensitive and culturally proud early childhood development for 3–4-year-olds, so to support with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families transition into kindergarten.

Key responsibilities:

  • Utilising your early childhood development skills to assist with the delivery of preschool appropriate programming that is culturally inclusive.
  • You will support the development of the children’s foundational key skills to assist transitional into kindergarten.
  • You will support the supervision of the preschool children, reporting and documenting as required.
  • You will provide support to the children’s families, assisting them with early childhood development and providing support for access and inclusion.
  • You will prepare activities, ensure general cleanliness, safety of the service and children and the maintenance of equipment and children.

Essential 

  • Diploma of Children Services (or Higher)
  • Current First Aid, Asthma and Anaphylaxis Certificates. 
  • Food Handling Certificate
  • A current Driver’s Licence.
  • A current Victorian Working with Children Check (or willingness to obtain).
  • A current Victorian Police Check  (or willingness to obtain).
  • An understanding of or genuine willingness to learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their culture.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills and the ability to problem solve, negotiate, and resolve concerns and conflict. 

Desired

  • Experience working with children with additional needs.
  • Experience working in Aboriginal community-controlled settings.
  • Knowledge of health and wellbeing issues that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities face. 

 

Key Selection Criteria

  • Clear and effective written and oral communication skills that is readily understood by the intended audience.
  • Experience in a kindergarten environment, working within a strength-based and family centered approach.
  • Desire to develop warm, respectful, and positive relationships with staff, children, and families.
  • A genuine passion for creating a safe, secure, culturally appropriate, and nurturing environment.
  • Demonstrated capacity to manage sensitive information, maintain confidentiality and always remain impartial.
  • Have a well-developed understanding of the Early Years Learning Framework, National Quality Standards and National Regulations.

We are a Community Controlled Organisation (Not-for-profit) that has been servicing the Aboriginal and/Torres Strait Islander community since 1994 when it was established by local Aboriginal Community Members. The purpose of MAC was and continues to be promotion of a healthy and proud community through motivation, education and cultural acknowledgement while ensuring a sense of belonging. MAC has grown to over 30 staff members and is projected to grow exponentially over the coming years. 

As MAC’s Casual Preschool Diploma Educator you will report to the Preschool Director. You will contribute positively to the multi-disciplinary Child and Families Program team and engage and build relationships with children, parents, local stakeholders, organisations and agencies, with the common purpose of developing educational programs that support the early childhood development of children. You will harness our values of cultural proudness, empowerment, collaboration, respect, integrity, and compassion in all aspects of your position within community and MAC and will have these values reciprocated. MAC promotes a supportive and culturally safe environment in all personal and professional realms. MAC will strive to support any professional development to advance your capabilities in successfully completing your role and responsibilities with numerous opportunities for growth within the organisation.
