Engagement type: Permanent

AEMO at the Heart of Energy

AEMO is Australia’s independent energy system and market operator and system planner. AEMO’s purpose is to ensure safe, reliable and affordable energy today, and enable the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians.  Australian governments are now committed to a net zero economy for Australia by 2050 and our vision is to enable this. We have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to co-design the future of our energy systems, and our core values revolve around character, commitment, and connection. Join us as we contribute to this significant transition in the energy sector.

About the role

The WA CIA team is responsible to operate the Reserve Capacity Mechanism (RCM), a unique feature of the Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM) and pivotal to its operations. The RCM ensures sufficient energy producing systems and demand side management capacity is available to support reliable electricity supply in the WA grid.

In this dynamic role, you will get to work with a smart, diverse and supportive group of people while actively leading and contributing to key processes that have a significant financial outcome on the WEM and its stakeholders. You will be actively supporting important reform initiatives aimed at transitioning WA’s electricity sector to a zero-carbon future.

Be prepared for a cerebral workout most days as you use your expertise and regulatory understanding of the WEM to drive outcomes that support the secure and reliable supply of electricity in the WEM.

What you will be doing

  • Drive the development and present strategic comprehensive analysis to support a wide range of RCM functions and inform related decision-making processes.

  • Provide expert advice to internal and external stakeholders in formal/informal forums, providing insights into the technical, operational, and commercial aspects of the RCM, including risk assessments, drafting relevant material (memos, briefing notes, presentations, etc.) and recommendations to the management and senior leadership team in a timely manner.

  • Lead/undertake thorough reviews of technical documents, adhering to strict due-diligence, compliance with the regulatory instruments and confidentiality standards.

  • Identify, recommend and implement process improvements that minimise compliance risks, enhance operational efficiency, and strengthen organisational capabilities.

  • Lead the development of and maintain effective working relationships with external stakeholders that include retailers, generators, the network operator, and the policy maker, and support AEMO’s involvement in government policy initiatives and WEM regulatory matters.

What you will bring to the role

  • Understanding of the political and regulatory framework in which the energy industry operates, the operation of energy markets and power systems, and a comprehensive understanding of the changes in the energy sector and how these affect AEMO.

  • Demonstrated experience in delivering compliance while undertaking analysis, following procedures and developing reports in a commercial/regulatory environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop high quality written material and deliver effective and clear presentations which communicate highly technical, complicated concepts or issues to varied audiences.

  • Demonstrated experience successfully leading complicated technical and/or operational activities/projects by working effectively in large teams and across organisations.

  • Passion for energy with a strong attention to detail, a resilient and collegiate team member that actively coaches others in the team while being self-motivated and focussed.

In return some of our benefits to you

  • Flexible working: work from home, part time, job share, hybrid options, and additional leave options

  • Professional development via projects, industry networks, job rotation, study assistance and more.

  • Give back with up to 4 days of volunteering leave per year.

  • Reward your hard work with annual performance bonuses (subject to eligibility).

  • Embrace a healthier you with our wellness program, discounted health insurance, gym perks and our comprehensive Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
