Division: System Design

Department: Forecasting

Reference number: 13109

Engagement type: Permanent

AEMO at the Heart of Energy

AEMO is Australia’s independent energy system and market operator and system planner. AEMO’s purpose is to ensure safe, reliable and affordable energy today, and enable the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians.  Australian governments are now committed to a net zero economy for Australia by 2050 and our vision is to enable this. We have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to co-design the future of our energy systems, and our core values revolve around character, commitment, and connection. Join us as we contribute to this significant transition in the energy sector.

About the division and team

AEMO’s Forecasting Group within the System Design Division delivers long and medium term forecasts of Australia’s energy supply and demand. These forecasts underpin key planning publications, including the Electricity Statement of Opportunities, Gas Statement of Opportunities and the Integrated System Plan.

Within this group, the Demand Forecasting team produces subregional and regional electricity demand forecasts for the National Electricity Market and the Wholesale Energy Market. The team focuses on medium to long term horizons, spanning years to decades, in contrast to operational forecasting, which covers shorter timeframes from hours to days.

AEMO is expanding its team with a new Principal Data Scientist role contributing to a high-impact initiative shaping future energy outcomes. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the energy transition by helping to shape how demand-side solutions are identified, understood, and integrated into future system planning.

The position has the flexibility to be based out of any of our offices in – Sydney (two locations CBD and Norwest), Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Hobart.

What you will be doing

The Principal Data Scientist leads the development, review and communication of medium to long term electricity consumption forecasts, including defining inputs and assumptions, building and validating forecasting models, and communicating methodologies and results.

Operating at the intersection of data, modelling and energy system expertise, the role focuses on building new models using large, complex datasets, combining strong analytical and data management capability with the ability to guide others, communicate insights clearly, and articulate a forward-looking modelling vision.

  • Provide expert technical advice on forecasting methodologies, including the application of statistical, econometric, dynamic/causal and machine learning approaches.

  • Develop, review and communicate model inputs and assumptions, including economic demand, energy end-use technologies and consumer behaviour trends.

  • Design, build and enhance energy forecasting models, including techno-economic models, end use technology stock models and consumer behaviour models.

  • Work with large and complex datasets, leveraging modern tools and platforms (e.g. Python, Databricks) to support robust model development and analysis.

  • Guide and influence modelling approaches, balancing technical leadership with collaboration, communication and stakeholder alignment.

  • Build and maintain strong, proactive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

This is an ideal opportunity for being at the forefront of innovation and national impact.

In return some of our benefits to you

  • Flexible working: work from home, part time, job share, hybrid options, and additional leave options

  • Professional development via projects, industry networks, job rotation, study assistance and more.

  • Give back with up to 4 days of volunteering leave per year.

  • Reward your hard work with annual performance bonuses (subject to eligibility).

  • Embrace a healthier you with our wellness program, discounted health insurance, gym perks and our comprehensive Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
