Project Engineering Advisor

Join our Sydney Roads and Asset Performance team as a Project Engineering Advisor, where you'll provide specialist engineering advice and technical assurance to support the planning and development of civil infrastructure projects.

Working closely with the Project Development Manager and Project Development Engineers, you'll review project designs, scopes, specifications and consultant submissions to ensure engineering solutions are practical, compliant, fit for purpose and deliver value across the asset lifecycle. You'll identify technical risks and opportunities, provide expert advice, and collaborate with project teams, designers and consultants to support safe, efficient and high-quality project outcomes.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineering professional seeking a flexible, advisory role where your technical expertise will help shape the successful delivery of Sydney's road infrastructure projects.

Key Responsibilities

• Review concept, preliminary, and detailed civil engineering designs to ensure technical quality, compliance, and alignment with project objectives.


• Identify design errors, constructability issues, safety risks, and opportunities to improve project outcomes and whole-of-life asset performance.


• Provide independent technical advice on design suitability, value for money, and engineering best practice.


• Assess project scopes, design assumptions, and consultant submissions to ensure proposed works are justified, fit for purpose, and meet operational and asset management requirements.


• Monitor design deliverables against agreed scope, quality, and program, identifying and escalating risks or delays where required.


• Ensure compliance with relevant Australian Standards, TfNSW requirements, specifications, and contractual obligations.


• Review design variations, departures, and technical queries, providing clear recommendations and technical guidance.


• Support project development by defining technical requirements, design criteria, scope, cost estimates, risk assessments, and option evaluations.


• Participate in multidisciplinary design reviews, value engineering workshops, and technical meetings to optimise project outcomes.


• Liaise with designers, consultants, contractors, and stakeholders to resolve technical issues and maintain effective engineering governance.

About You

You are an experienced Civil Engineering Advisor/Consultant or Senior Civil Engineer with a strong background in reviewing and assuring civil infrastructure designs. You have excellent technical judgement and are confident providing independent engineering advice to support project planning and delivery.

You will bring:

• Extensive experience in civil, road and transport infrastructure engineering, including reviewing and assuring engineering designs and technical documentation.


• Strong knowledge of civil engineering standards, design principles, constructability, asset management and industry best practice.


• Proven ability to identify technical, constructability, compliance and operational risks, and provide practical, value-driven engineering solutions.


• Demonstrated ability to challenge technical proposals constructively, influence design outcomes and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.


• Excellent analytical, problem-solving and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.


• Demonstrated experience estimating civil projects within a similar environment.


• High attention to detail, strong written and verbal communication skills, and proficiency in CAT software.
