What is the job opportunity?
We are seeking an experienced MUD Technician to support Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) operations by managing the drilling fluid (mud) system to maximise drilling performance, maintain bore stability, and ensure environmental compliance. This is a hands-on site role requiring strong technical judgement, attention to detail, and close coordination with the HDD Driller, Superintendent and engineering team.
The Role
Develop, implement and continuously optimise drilling fluid programs to suit tooling, bore profile and anticipated ground conditions.
Monitor and adjust key fluid properties based on ground conditions.
Operate, maintain and troubleshoot mud mixing, pumping, cleaning/recycling and waste management systems.
Control pressures to mitigate frac-out risks.
Interpret drilling performance indicators (returns, cuttings, torque/drag, pressures, pump rates) and provide clear recommendations to the HDD Driller to respond to changing conditions.
Maintain accurate daily records including mud volumes, products used, test results, losses/returns, incidents and corrective actions; provide end-of-shift and daily reporting.
Support environmental controls and compliance including containment, spill prevention/response, waste segregation and appropriate disposal tracking.
About You
The successful applicant will have the following qualifications/ experience and capabilities:
Demonstrated experience as a MUD Technician/Drilling Fluids Technician on HDD, pipeline crossings, or similar fluid-managed drilling environments.
Strong working knowledge of drilling fluid systems, mixing and solids control, and the practical application of fluid testing and treatment.
Ability to read and follow drilling fluid programs, understand basic borehole hydraulics concepts, and adapt treatment plans to ground changes.
High commitment to safety, environmental compliance and disciplined documentation.
Competency to carry out basic maintenance and troubleshooting on pumps, hoses, valves and mixing equipment.
