Job Description - Senior Lecturer in Environment and Science & Quantum Sensing

Company Description

Every institution values excellence. What matters most is why.

Griffith was created to be a different type of university. You’ll find we’re about leading research, academic excellence, and the transformative power of education. But what sets us apart is why those things matter and how you’ll achieve them.

Why? Griffith brings together exceptional minds like yours from across the globe and from all walks of life. Here, we do incredible work, questioning and challenging, always in the pursuit of excellence.

Job Description

The School of Environment and Science maintains an illustrious research position across numerous industry sectors, guiding and informing its learning and teaching. Our school is committed to contributing to the planet's sustainable future by identifying and measuring environmental problems and offering solution-driven approaches. Our research and teaching staff are acknowledged as world industry leaders, working across the broad science and environment disciplines enabling us to develop and deliver comprehensive study programs. We partner with industry, government, and the community to drive innovation and achieve success.

Queensland Quantum Decarbonisation Alliance

The applicant will work within the Queensland Quantum Decarbonisation Alliance (QDA), which seeks to position Queensland as a global leader in quantum technologies for decarbonisation. The QDA will bring together twenty-seven partners across academia and industry to create a world-leading quantum decarbonisation effort in Queensland. The QDA will establish seven new large-scale research teams in Queensland, in close partnership with PsiQuantum as they build their first utility-scale quantum computer here. It will train a pipeline of cross-disciplinary talent in our universities and industry, including undergraduate and Masters coursework, PhD programs, and quantum up-skilling for industry.

Join us in shaping the future of quantum innovation in Queensland.

As a Senior Lecturer, you’ll take on complex local and global challenges, using your skills and experience to advance quantum sensing and drive meaningful change in decarbonisation. Here’s how you’ll make it matter:

  • You will contribute to the Griffith Node of the Queensland Quantum Decarbonisation Alliance (QDA), and pursue research aimed at reducing climate impact by the application of quantum technology.
  • You will seek collaborations and knowledge-sharing within QDA, both at Griffith and with researchers at the University of Queensland (lead Node), Psi-Quantum, and other partners.
  • You will work with a QDA-funded team in ESC comprising yourself, a 3-year postdoc, and a PhD student funded by the project.
  • You will ensure that your team contributes as required to the relevant milestones in QQDA – including research goals, relevant course development and teaching, training, and industry engagement.
  • You will be expected to contribute to the School’s teaching activities by fostering an outstanding student experience and promoting active engagement in learning. This includes delivering high-quality, student-centred teaching across undergraduate, postgraduate and professional programs, as well as contributing to curriculum development, assessment design, and continuous enhancement of teaching practices, in alignment with Griffith’s Graduates of the Future strategy.

This is a continuing contingent funded position (funding confirmed for an initial 5 years), full time, research focused, primarily based at Griffith University Brisbane South (Nathan). The successful candidate for this role will be required to attract and generate competitive research funding to support the position beyond the initial 5 year term.

As Griffith is a multi-campus University you may be required to work across other campus locations.

Griffith University’s sites are located on the lands of the Yugarabul, Yuggera, Jagera, Turrbal, Yugambeh and Kombumerri peoples.

Salary Range

Qualifications

What matters most is your drive to create a brighter future that benefits all. Through our core principles of excellence, ethics and engagement, you’ll thrive on seeing the direct and lasting impact you’ll have on every community and every future.

You will also have:

  • A doctoral qualification in physics or a related area (e.g. engineering) or equivalent accreditation and standing.
  • A strong track record in experimental quantum optics and/or optical quantum information science, proven by publications.
  • Other relevant experience, preferably in areas such as single-photon sources, single-photon spectroscopy, and quantum simulations.
  • Experience and demonstrated competence in teaching, and preferably also course-development, outreach, grant management, training, and industry engagement.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervision skills and ability to attract external funding.
