Job Description - Reporter

Company Description

WAtoday has been a powerful, independent voice in WA media since launching in 2008. In joining us you'll play a key role in maintaining our reputation as one of the state’s most-read and trusted news sites, delivering quality, fearless journalism across a breadth of topics.

Job Description

WAtoday is looking for an enthusiastic reporter who wants to take the next step in their career and join our team of skilled journalists at the Nine Publishing masthead based in Perth.

The role requires a multi-skilled journalist with the ability to write with authority across a range of subjects including business, politics and local councils. The reporter will be expected to combine breaking news, analysis and feature writing capability at the highest level.

We are looking for someone who can break news of national significance that will also be published in our sister publications, the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and Brisbane Times.

Day to day you will:

  • Break news stories from across WA, including business and property news, civil and criminal court matters, and local government developments.
  • Write impactful and exclusive stories with national relevance, to be shared across Nine's mastheads.
  • Produce in-depth coverage of topics relevant to readers in Perth and Western Australia, including feature-length investigations.
  • Deliver clean, accurate, and timely copy to meet the fast-paced demands of the newsroom.
  • Maintain and develop relationships with key figures across WA’s business, politics,  development and local government sectors to source stories.
  • Write numerous stories a week for the news website, ensuring consistency in quality.

Qualifications

What you’ll bring:

  • Proven experience as a journalist, preferably for a major news organisation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in courts, local government, development and planning and/or property market reporting.
  • Proven track record of breaking major news stories and producing well-researched, insightful content.
  • A contact book that covers Perth and broader WA will be beneficial.
  • A clear, professional writing style with a demonstrated ability to produce clean, engaging copy.
  • Comfortable working under tight deadlines in a fast-paced news environment.
