YOUR ROLE IN THE FUTURE
Research Manager
Ongoing, Full-Time Position (80 hours per fortnight) with Monthly ADO
Part-time (0.8 EFT) may be considered
 
Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre is seeking an experienced and motivated Research Manager to join the Department of Radiation Oncology (DRO). This is a key leadership role within one of Australia’s most successful and dynamic radiation oncology research programs.
 
About the Department
The Department of Radiation Oncology at Peter Mac is the largest radiation oncology clinical research department in Australia, supporting a diverse and active portfolio of clinical trials and research projects across five hospital campuses. The department is recognised for its innovative, investigator-led research and strong collaborative culture.
 
About the Role
Reporting within the DRO leadership structure, the Research Manager provides strategic leadership and operational oversight of clinical research and clinical trials across the department. You will play a central role in driving research excellence, supporting investigators, and leading a team of clinical trial professionals.
 
Key Responsibilities
•    Contribute to strategic research planning and lead the operationalisation of research strategies to ensure departmental goals are achieved
•    Oversee the operational management of clinical trials and clinical research projects across multiple campuses
•    Lead, mentor, and manage a team of clinical trial coordination staff
•    Maintain and enhance support programs for researchers and investigators
•    Manage research finances, including budgeting, reporting, and compliance

Remuneration as per Allied Health Professionals (Victorian Public Sector) (Single Interest Employers) Enterprise Agreement 2021-2026. SNR RESEARCH FELLOW LEVEL C (1RV1): $121,752.80 – (1RV6): $140,150.40 (full-time equivalent - to be prorated for Part Time) dependent on candidate experience. To be discussed with Hiring Manager.

Position Summary

The purpose of the position is to provide leadership and effective management of clinical research and clinical trials within the Department of Radiation Oncology (DRO). The Research Manager is responsible for:



  • Participation in strategic research planning and operationalisation of the strategy, ensuring research goals are achieved.

  • Operational management of radiation oncology clinical trials and research projects across 5 Peter Mac campuses including feasibility, budget management and resource allocation.

  • Management of a team of clinical trial coordination staff including training, professional development, workload, and recruitment.

  • Maintaining and enhancing a support program for researchers including practical assistance in project development, grant and ethics and governance applications, budgets, GCP compliance and education.

  • In conjunction with the finance team, ensure effective monitoring and management of budgets for grants and cost centre oversight.

  • To contribute to the development and implementation of clinical research governance, leadership, and strategy at Peter Mac.

  • Ensuring all clinical trials are conducted in accordance with the study protocol and in line


with the regulatory, ethical, and legal requirements outlined by ICH-GCP, the NHMRC National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research, and applicable laws and institutional policies.

Essential Requirements

  • High level management skills including leadership, staff management experience and confidence and ability to make decisions.

  • Broad clinical research experience including low and high risk research and experience in investigator led research

  • At least 3 years clinical trial management experience inclusive of project development, feasibility, ethics & governance, trial conduct and data management.

  • Knowledge of the research grant application process and grant management.

  • Expert knowledge of Australian regulatory requirements including TGA, ICH GCP, A-CTEC, National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research and understanding of international regulatory and research governance requirements


Desirable Requirements

  • Postgraduate degree in health sciences or equivalent

  • Change management experience

  • Exceptional communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.

  • Research management experience in oncology

  • Budget preparation and tracking experience

  • Research contract management experience

1.  Leadership in Clinical Research

  • Participates in the strategic planning activities and assists operational delivery of the DRO research strategy and program.

  • Provides expert advice relating to the conduct of clinical research to members of the Department, across all 5 campuses.

  • Provides expert advice, support and mentorship to Radiation Therapy and Physical Science Researchers, across all 5 campuses

  • Reviews research practice and implements appropriate change in line with national standards

  • Participates in department and institutional clinical research forums and meetings.

  • Ensures the conduct of clinical research is in accordance with TGA ICH GCP and the NHMRC National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research and any other statutory and regulatory requirements (eg Privacy laws), in order to protect the research participants and quality of each study.

  • Contributes to the development of clinical research standards at Peter Mac by participating in relevant committees.

  • Ensures GCP training of all trial investigators and trial staff is complete


2. Effective team leadership and oversight of radiation oncology research

  • Leads, motivates, supports, develops, and retains the radiation oncology clinical research team utilising mentorship, objective setting and appraisal.

  • Ensures the initial and ongoing training, competency and professional needs of clinical trial coordinators are met.

  • Plans for future clinical trials staff resourcing needs in line with the strategic plan and future clinical trial development.

  • Oversees clinical trial implementation processes (feasibility, ethical, management, financial and resources implications) in DRO to ensure that planned research studies are commenced with all required approvals and without undue delay.

  • Ensures effective practices and communication processes are in place to meet the needs of patients, relatives, investigators and other members of the multidisciplinary/research team and the professional standards, regulatory and scientific requirements of each study.

  • In conjunction with the Director DRO and the DRO Lead forResearch, maintains processes to determine which clinical protocols are undertaken within department resources.

  • Monitor clinical trial implementation and conduct including study metrics, recruitment and study budget.

3. Research Development, Support and Delivery




  • Works with grants team to highlight funding opportunities

  • Provides regulatory updates and other relevant research information for researchers.

  • Provides advice and support to members of the Department regarding protocol development, implementation, approvals and management.

  • Provides assistance with the grant application process, budget preparation and mentoring where appropriate.

  • Liaises with the Peter Mac Foundation, industry, and other relevant funding bodies to enhance opportunities to obtain research funding


4. Financial Management

  • Works with the Director of DRO, The DRO Business Manager, and the Commercial Finance Partner (CFP) to ensure good oversight and management of research funds, grants and the research cost centre funds.

  • Monitor clinical trial budgets including milestone payments, trial revenue, trial expenses and reporting.

  • Work with CFP and trial investigators to develop clinical trial and research project budgets.
