Job Description - Safety Advisor

Company Description

Steelmaking coal is an essential ingredient in blast-furnace steel manufacture, producing steel used for critical building and infrastructure around the world.  In Australia, we operate five steelmaking coal mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, and have additional joint venture interests in steelmaking coal and manganese, as well as copper exploration projects underway in Northwest Queensland and Western Australia.

Job Description

An opportunity exists for a diligent and structured Safety Advisor to join the Safety & Health team at our Dawson Mine on a full-time permanent basis. With your diverse capability in communicating with a range of stakeholders and high level of planning and problem solving, you will add value through your commitment to Health & Safety. You will be responsible for implementing and maintaining our contractor management system as well as our emergency management system. You’ll achieve this by working collaboratively with our contracting partners to maintain compliance with our Safety & Health Management Systems and ensuring we maintain response readiness for emergencies..  

Your responsibilities will include the following, not limited to:

  • Ensure the timely and accurate review, approval and oversight of contractor management processes, including Work Scoping, Risk Assessments, Authority to Work and Permit to Work.
  • Support development and drive implementation of approved digitalized solutions for contractor permitting.
  • Ensure relevant safety and health communications are being received by contractors on site, eg toolbox talks, SHEMS updates / Alerts.
  • Ensure Contractor Management Plan, templates and other documentation is maintained in line with Anglo American and regulatory requirements.
  • Support investigation of incidents involving contractors, including monitoring for repeats and distribution of relevant learnings across contracting companies (and across other Anglo American sites).
  • Attend and present at relevant communication forums on contractor safety performance, opportunities and initiatives.
  • Report regularly to the SLT on the mine’s performance against the Contractor Management Plan.
  • Co-ordinate and facilitate implementation of contractor safety management training and appointment process.
  • Scheduling mines rescue training and ensure there is sufficient coverage of ERT members.
  • Coordinate emergency exercises to ensure that the mine complies with statutory obligations and that site personnel can effectively respond in emergency events.
  • Coordinate and facilitate emergency response training for ERT personnel, site leadership and staff.
  • Ensure mines rescue equipment is maintained
  • Chair the SHE Committee meetings.

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline such as Safety or Health Science.
  • Supervisor and Risk Facilitator competencies desirable (S1, 2, 3 & G1 or G2).
  • Demonstrated experience in a similar role on a mine site (coal preferred).
  • Knowledge of safety policies and procedures.
  • Consistently demonstrating required behaviours and championing safety values.
  • Proficiency in data analysis, reporting and systems.
