Griffith was created to be a different type of university. You’ll find we’re about leading research, academic excellence, and the transformative power of education. But what sets us apart is why those things matter and how you’ll achieve them.

Why? Griffith brings together exceptional minds like yours from across the globe and from all walks of life. Here, we do incredible work, questioning and challenging, always in the pursuit of excellence.

Griffith is committed to the success of our staff and students, with one of the largest First Peoples staff and student cohorts of any Australian University.

Job Description

The School of Environment and Science maintains an distinguished research position across numerous industry sectors, guiding and informing its learning and teaching.  Our school is committed to contributing to the planet's sustainable future by identifying and measuring environmental problems and offering solution-driven approaches. Our research and teaching staff are acknowledged as world industry leaders, working across the broad science and environment disciplines enabling us to develop and deliver comprehensive study programs. We partner with industry, government, and the community to drive innovation and achieve success.

We are currently looking for a scientific officer and senior scientific officer to support teaching and research in the School of Environment and Science’s Nathan teaching laboratories. The positions will primarily support teaching and, on occasion, also assist research facilities and engagement activities. Both roles also include the upkeep of laboratory documentation and assisting with H&S compliance.

As a scientific officer, you will take on complex challenges, using your skills and experience to drive meaningful change. Here’s how you’ll make it matter:

  • Provide technical and operational support for teaching, e.g., planning; set-up; refreshing; pre-running; using and demonstrating equipment; and dismantling of experiments for teaching laboratories.
  • Perform regular calibration, minor maintenance and service scheduling of all relevant instrumentation and equipment.
  • Provide training and supervision of Scientific Assistants, Attendants and Casual staff when they are assigned to the area that is within the remit of the Scientific Officer’s responsibility.
  • Provide technical assistance, including advice on sample preparation, to Griffith University staff and students, and representatives from external organisations as directed by line managers in the Environmental Sciences team.
  • Support ESC outreach and community engagement events and activities as directed by the line managers.

About you

What matters most is your drive to create a brighter future that benefits all. Through our core principles of excellence, ethics and engagement, you’ll thrive on seeing the direct and lasting impact you’ll have on every community and every future.

The scientific officer will have:

  • A B.Sc. degree or equivalent with a major in environmental, biological, ecological or soil sciences and relevant practical experience, or an equivalent combination of education, skills and experience.

Applicants must have unrestricted working rights. Sponsorship is not available for this position.

What we can offer

This is a continuing, full-time role primarily based at Griffith University’s Brisbane South (Nathan) campus. As Griffith is a multi-site University you may be required to work across other locations.

Griffith University’s sites are located on the lands of the Yugarabul, Yuggera, Jagera, Turrbal, Yugambeh and Kombumerri peoples.

HEW 5 Salary - Base range - $79,706.66 - $89,416.39 + 17% super. Full package range is $93,255.63 - $104,617.18.
