Division: System Design

Department: Future Energy Systems

Reference number: 13104

Engagement type: Fixed Term Contract

AEMO at the Heart of Energy

AEMO is Australia’s independent energy system and market operator and system planner. AEMO’s purpose is to ensure safe, reliable and affordable energy today, and enable the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians.  Australian governments are now committed to a net zero economy for Australia by 2050 and our vision is to enable this. We have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to co-design the future of our energy systems, and our core values revolve around character, commitment, and connection. Join us as we contribute to this significant transition in the energy sector.

About the role

We have an exciting 12-month secondment opportunity for a Senior Analyst within our Future Energy Systems team. Join a talented and supportive team at the forefront of the energy transition, delivering leading-edge projects and initiatives across the NEM.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading analysis of Distributed Energy Resource integration initiatives, delivering insights to inform strategic decisions.

  • Coordinating stakeholder engagement and collaboration, supporting roadmap-aligned prioritisation and capability development

We’re seeking a highly motivated individual with strong power systems knowledge and a passion for expanding their capabilities while helping accelerate the transition to a net-zero-emissions energy.

At the Australian Energy Market Operator we provide an essential service and actively support flexible working arrangements, with strong team culture, communication and collaboration across the organisation.

What you will be doing

  • Lead projects assessing emerging DER-related power system challenges and solutions.

  • Analyse system impacts through testing, modelling and stakeholder collaboration.

  • Lead internal and external stakeholder engagement and strategic collaboration.

  • Support project prioritisation aligned to AEMO’S Engineering Roadmap and the National CER Roadmap.

  • Prepare reports, recommendations and presentations for varied audiences.

  • Provide technical guidance and support to junior team members.

You will define problems and opportunities by analysing data, testing assumptions, and assessing how standards and requirements apply in practice. You’ll work with a diverse team of passionate engineers, analysts and DER specialists to support solution development. The focus is on understanding system behaviour and implications rather than designing solutions. A background in power systems is essential, with the ability to engage technical stakeholders and confidently interpret planning or operational discussions.

What you will bring to the role

Education/Certificates

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in Engineering, Technology, or Science/Maths, or equivalent relevant discipline or work experience.

  • Proficient use of all Microsoft Office product suite.

Experience and Knowledge

  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary power systems projects.

  • Ability to prepare and review high-quality technical reports and documentation.

  • Strong analytical skills to interpret and summarise complex data and findings.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication across diverse audiences.

  • Proactive and outcomes-focused, with strong stakeholder relationship skills.

Desirable

  • Significant experience within the energy industry or related technical fields.

  • Strong understanding of power systems and the ability to apply knowledge to complex technical challenges.

In return some of our benefits to you

  • Flexible working: work from home, part time, job share, hybrid options, and additional leave options

  • Professional development via projects, industry networks, job rotation, study assistance and more.

  • Give back with up to 4 days of volunteering leave per year.

  • Reward your hard work with annual performance bonuses (subject to eligibility).

  • Embrace a healthier you with our wellness program, discounted health insurance, gym perks and our comprehensive Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
