Job Description - Senior Conflicts & Compliance Lawyer - 12 month contract

About Dentons

Dentons is the world's largest law firm. We're 20,000+ people globally across 80+ countries including USA; Europe; India and Asia. We are a global polycentric firm which is expanding rapidly in an increasingly globalised legal industry.

Dentons now consistently ranks as one of the five best regarded legal brands in the world according to the Acritas Global Elite Law Firm Brand Index.

About the Role

We have a compelling opportunity for a senior governance / compliance lawyer seeking to move in-house into our General Counsel and Risk Department, ideally based in our Sydney office but may be based in any of our other Australian offices in Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide or Brisbane. This opportunity is a 12 month maximum term contract.

The role will report directly to the Legal Risk & Compliance Manager. The Senior Conflicts and Compliance lawyer will work as part of the global team and will be responsible for supporting the General Counsel and Company Secretary, and the Legal Risk & Compliance Manager, in providing a range of legal and compliance services to Dentons and its lawyers. The main features of this role will see you manage Dentons' conflict clearance and client approval process, including acting as the first escalation point for potential commercial or legal conflict or risk issues identified by the Conflicts and Compliance Lawyer and other members of the Conflicts Team.

The Senior Conflicts and Compliance Lawyer will work closely with the firm locally and globally to streamline conflict processes and analyse information in the firm's conflict management system and other databases, as well as educating and training staff on conflicts matters and presenting all conflicts / risk presentations across our Australian and PNG offices. The Senior Conflicts and Compliance Lawyer will also assist the General Counsel and Company Secretary to:

  • provide general legal advice to the firm and to identify and address legal risk issues across the firm including in contractual arrangements, lawyers' professional obligations and professional indemnity issues; and
  • to ensure the firm's compliance with its obligations as a public company, including maintaining the firm's share register, drafting resolutions and advising on meeting requirements.

About You

This role would suit someone with experience as a conflicts lawyer or within a law firm Office of General Counsel, or a lawyer (4-7 years PQE) with relevant corporate, commercial and/or compliance or company secretarial experience, that has worked in a professional services environment and has excellent research and analytical skills. A high level of attention to detail and a desire to move out of private practice is also sought.

Why Dentons

We offer:
