As a Senior Data Engineer at Nine, you will work within the Enterprise Data business unit to build high-performing data products and reduce complexity across our data systems and models. You will partner closely with our Product function to enable innovative solutions, specifically focusing on the Data Publishing space. Your role is critical in processing hundreds of millions of events daily from iconic mastheads including The Australian Financial Review, The Sydney Morning Herald, and The Age. And centralizing enterprise data into our data warehouse to inform business operations and strategy.

Day to day you will:

  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable data pipelines and models that extract, load, and transform data from various sources into the data warehouse.
  • Lead and guide solution designs, ensuring the team understands the technical "why" and "how" while documenting designs to enhance collective knowledge.
  • Champion engineering best practices across coding, DevOps, and metadata standardizations to ensure high-quality output within project timelines.
  • Integrate emerging technologies and AI tools into daily workflows for code suggestions, data profiling, and automated testing.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders and adjacent technology teams, including Cyber Security and Platform Engineering, to maintain organizational standards and resolve incidents.
  • Work closely with Product Managers to shape data solutions, understand end-user requirements, and support stakeholders through knowledge sharing.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor's or master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field is highly desirable.
  • Deep understanding of cloud migration strategies, best practices, and potential pitfalls.

What you’ll bring:

  • Technical Mastery: Fluency in Python and SQL, with a deep understanding of OLTP and OLAP schema design concepts.
  • Pipeline Expertise: Proven experience leading the design of data pipelines and managing infrastructure using tools like Apache Airflow and DBT.
  • Cloud & DevOps Skills: Proficiency with major cloud platforms (GCP, AWS, or Azure) and CI/CD solutions like Cloud Build or Concourse.
  • Modern Engineering Standards: Knowledge of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform and the ability to leverage AI to support engineering tasks.
  • Leadership & Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to lead technical discussions, build consensus, and work effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Problem-Solving Mindset: A strong analytical approach and a passion for finding creative solutions to complex technical challenges.
