Quantum Brilliance is the world leader in room temperature quantum computing. The company has created diamond quantum microprocessors using the most advanced diamond fabrication techniques. Our unique vision is to make quantum technologies available in everyday devices, from data centres to remote and mobile systems like autonomous robots and satellites. In addition to the quantum accelerators Quantum Brilliance is exploring applications of its patented diamond fabrication methods in quantum sensing.
Founded in 2019 by leaders in diamond quantum science from the Australian National University, an Australia-German company, our HQs are in Canberra and Stuttgart, with additional locations across Australia and southern Germany. We are a venture-capital backed company with Tier-1 investors including Main Sequence, Moelis Asset Management, quantum computing and machine learning serial entrepreneurs. Overview of the role:
The Senior Physicist will work in our Canberra-based Quantum Devices and Development (QDEV) team, where we are developing and manufacturing compact, room-temperature diamond NV-centre based quantum computer hardware and software. They will be involved in product specification, design and development, quantum system benchmarking, and pushing the limits of performance on both our laboratory and product-prototype systems.
Key Accountabilities:
Controlling complex systems of electronic and nuclear spins.
Executing quantum circuits and benchmarking protocols, as well as interpreting their results.
Leading the design and implementation of experiments to characterise errors in spin control and qubit operation.
Building software tools to calibrate, verify and benchmark performance of both classical control and quantum hardware, for characterisation and quality control.
Specifying requirements for quantum control software and hardware, and inputting into the design and development of future generation quantum systems.
Mentoring and guiding other physicists.
Technical Capabilities:
Required:
Experience with control and characterisation of multi-qubit quantum systems (ideally NV centres in diamond, or similar spin-based quantum systems, e.g. neutral atoms, trapped ions, solid state defects, superconducting qubits.)
Experience with quantum circuits and relevant optimisation methods.
Proven track record in technical leadership of projects (defining and solving problems), and mentoring others.
Growth mind-set that enjoys pace and constantly evolving challenges, with a passion for turning cutting edge science into practical reality.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills, able to articulate complex ideas, and ability to establish productive working relationships in a multidisciplinary, commercial environment.
Team-first mindset — you value shared progress, support your colleagues, and prioritise collective goals.
Desired:
3+ years' experience in control and characterisation of multi-qubit quantum systems
Python-based software development for interface with and control of hardware
Familiarity with other programming languages – e.g. C++
Demonstrated ability to:
Understand quantum systems and test them experimentally
Design, build, control, and troubleshoot experimental systems
Participate in collaborative software projects
Deliver results through publication, patents, operational products, etc.
Expertise with relevant experimental equipment and techniques such as:
RF electronics, including arbitrary waveform generation, mixers, amplifiers, and near-field antennas.
Experiment control systems: analogue and digital I/O, software control of hardware.
Research-grade laser-optics systems, e.g. confocal microscopes.
Qualifications:
PhD in Quantum Engineering, Physics or related field
