I currently work in the Devonport Materials & Environmental Laboratory as a Senior Scientist in the Chemistry department. This involves going on board submarines and ships and monitoring the atmosphere, to ensure it safe to breathe and work in. When I am not onboard, I can be found in the laboratory analysing different samples, from oils to gases, to make sure our people and equipment are safe.
A-Levels: Chemistry, Maths, and BTEC Science.
GCSE: core subjects, plus sociology, drama and resistant materials.
I grew up loving animals, both current and prehistoric, which made me want to become a vet. This really acted as a gateway into the sciences and over time I found a passion for Chemistry, which helped me gain an aptitude for the subject.
I’ve spent a lot of time working on board submarines and ships which I’ve really enjoyed, but the variety of people, with different interests and specialist subjects makes for a great team. I have gained a lot of friends since joining.
In the future I would quite like the become Head of Chemistry, developing and coaching members of my team and new starters. Supporting colleagues development is something that I have come to enjoy and I would like it continue in the future.
It’s important to push yourself out of your comfort zone and explore different options or subjects, many of which you probably never considered. It’s also equally important to enjoy what you do!
