About the Role

The Senior Technical Manager: Cryo-electron Microscopy plays a critical leadership role within UOW Research Infrastructure's CryoEM Facility, supporting world-class research outcomes through specialist technical expertise, facility management and user support. The role provides advanced training and technical services to researchers, students and external partners, while overseeing the operation, optimisation and future development of cutting-edge cryoEM instrumentation and workflows.

Key responsibilities:

• Lead the day-to-day operation, maintenance and optimisation of the CryoEM facility and associated instrumentation.
• Deliver expert training and support to internal and external users across cryoEM workflows, from sample preparation through to data analysis and structure determination.
• Develop, implement and enhance computational cryoEM processing workflows and data acquisition methods.
• Collaborate with researchers on experimental design, data collection and research projects in cryoEM structural biology.
• Supervise staff, manage facility access, and contribute to stakeholder engagement, reporting and scientific outputs.

About the Team

The position sits within UOW Research Infrastructure, a newly established strategic division within the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) Portfolio. The team provides leadership and oversight of major research facilities and infrastructure across the University, ensuring researchers have access to high-quality, sustainable and impactful capabilities. Working closely with researchers, students, industry partners and external stakeholders, the CryoEM Facility supports cutting-edge research that advances scientific discovery and innovation.

What You'll Bring

• Extensive hands-on experience in cryo-electron microscopy workflows, including sample preparation, image analysis and particle reconstruction.
• Demonstrated expertise operating, aligning, calibrating and troubleshooting advanced cryoEM platforms and associated automation software.
• Strong experience with contemporary cryoEM data processing platforms and high-performance computing environments.
• Proven ability to design, manage and deliver complex scientific projects, coupled with excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Experience leading or supervising staff within a research, technical or laboratory environment. A PhD in Biochemistry, Biology or a related discipline would be highly regarded.

Role Details

• Employment type: Continuing, full-time 
• Level: 8/9 | $123,283 - $152,959 + 17% superannuation
• Location: Wollongong Campus
• Valid Australian work rights required. Visa sponsorship is not available.
• This position is not suitable for remote working arrangements.
