Job Description - Senior Technical Officer , Environment and Science

As the Senior Technical Officer, you will:

  • Undertake and manage the day-to-day operations of the sample receipt and preparation team and storage facilities to ensure the delivery of quality analyses in a timely manner through effective and efficient use of resources.
  • Provide technical expertise with demonstrated proficiency in applying complex thought to conventional analytical preparation techniques on soil, plant, and water samples. Including techniques such as Kjeldahl digestion, extractions and hot nitric acid digestions, to which may be undertaken on an individual basis as well as within a team environment, under guidance from the group leaders.
  • Liaise with laboratory staff, clients, and suppliers to ensure workflow and operational requirements are meeting expectations.
  • Support and utilise the governance policy and procedure, systems activities, and processes within the business unit to fulfil all obligations under legislation including the Work Health and Safety Act 2012 and the Financial Accountability Act 2009.
  • Foster a workplace culture that supports and promotes the interests of First Nations people and actively engage through our work to contribute to better outcomes for First Nations people.

This position requires:

  • Demonstrated experience in leading a team, managing high throughput sample management (receipt and registration) and sample preparations related to water, soils, plant, and sediment analyses (preferably in a commercial laboratory) with demonstrated ability to maintain high standards of good laboratory practice.
  • Demonstrated high-level of analytical skills to support and diagnose complex technical problems with experience in soil and plant preparation, Kjeldahl digestion, soil and plant extractions, and hot nitric acid digestion.
  • Demonstrated experience in the use of databases as well as laboratory information Management System, statistical and word-processing software.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and efficiently in a team environment and to contribute to maintaining a high quality, timely and efficient laboratory operations.
