We are using and creating technology to transform operations at sea to enable people and the planet to thrive.

We are open-minded and fearless in our approach to innovation and don't believe in boundaries. We challenge everything and have massive ambitions to drag aging industries into the tech era.

We take safety, equality and education very seriously, and our responsibilities don't stop at our front door. Our business is built on the belief that there's definitely a more environmentally responsible way to operate at sea.

We employ people who share our core values. We expect our people to be courageous, trustworthy, and conscientious, driven by a desire to do the right thing. We strive for excellence, work collaboratively, and are genuinely excited by our work.

We offer opportunities for our people to develop beyond their role and span a multitude of disciplines.  These are open to all, regardless of background and experience level.  Working with us means being part of a team that is harnessing technology and creativity to disrupt a traditional industry.

We are not your average workplace.

We are looking for a Survey Engineer to join our APAC Solutions business unit in Hobart, Tasmania. The role ensures that OISL APAC’s field projects are furnished with sufficient equipment to deliver client outcomes, including an allowance for breakdowns and equipment loss, depending on the risk profile for the project.

This position works in close partnership with the Operations Manager, Project Manager, Surveyor in Charge, and wider field teams to support effective project delivery and equipment readiness across APAC Solutions operations. The role is suited to a technically capable and organised hydrographic survey professional who can make sound decisions in dynamic field environments, communicate clearly with operational teams, and maintain a proactive, service-focused approach to equipment reliability, data quality and project readiness.

What you will be doing

  • Managing maintenance, testing, calibration and maintenance planning in line with OISL APAC procedures, project requirements, manufacturer guidance and calibration standards to support project readiness, reliability, compliance, and safe equipment control.
  • Maintaining IMS asset records, ensuring inventory, maintenance status, supporting documentation and records remain current, including deployed equipment tracking through mobilisation, demobilisation and closeout.
  • Coordinating equipment mobilisation and demobilisation, including spares, consumables, freight, storage and supplier coordination, so that systems are available, safely transported, installed and maintained to project timelines and client requirements.
  • Providing technical support to the Surveyor in Charge during platform mobilisation, including equipment setup, calibration and functional testing to confirm readiness.
  • Documenting installation, hardware and software configuration, version status and approved changes so equipment state, configuration and readiness are clear.
  • Leading safe deployment and recovery of field equipment, including geodetic systems and seabed-deployed tidal equipment, in accordance with client requirements, Surveyor in Charge direction and OISL safe working practices.
  • Monitoring equipment performance, addressing defects or malfunctions, and communicating escalation pathways to minimise downtime, maintain data quality and ensure key personnel know who to contact
  • Leading fault and defect diagnosis and rectification for project equipment and associated hardware, working with the online acquisition team and equipment support services
  • Maintaining issue, repair and resolution logs, reporting recurring defects, recommending preventative measures and feeding lessons learned into maintenance plans and operational processes

Desirable: Leading data acquisition in the field, or the remote operations centre (ROC), supporting or fulfilling the role of Survey Party Chief.

Who you are

  • Strong safety mindset, with the ability to manage equipment-related risks, follow safe working practices and support the Safety Management System through safe equipment control.
  • Experience in hydrographic survey, marine operations and survey field delivery, with a technical understanding of field equipment, sensors and data acquisition workflows.
  • Demonstrated ability to support field activities in offshore environments, working effectively with Project Managers, Surveyors in Charge, survey teams, vessel crews and equipment support personnel.
  • Strong technical capability across survey equipment setup, calibration, testing, fault diagnosis, configuration control and operational readiness.
  • Proven ability to manage equipment records, maintenance status, defect logs and traceable handover information through structured systems and clear documentation.
  • Clear communicator able to brief operational teams, document equipment status and escalate defects or support requirements effectively.
  • Organised, proactive and service-focused, with the ability to prioritise equipment readiness, reliability and project quality assurance across multiple project demands.
  • Ability to meet recognised medical fitness requirements for marine operations (e.g., AMSA or equivalent), with reasonable adjustments considered

Desirable

  • Relevant hydrographic qualification, including IHO CAT B, AHS Certified Professional Hydrographic Surveyor Level 2, or proof of equivalent operational experience.
  • Experience supporting innovation, technical trials or field validation activities.
  • Marine or offshore safety training such as BOSIET, sea survival, first aid, HUET or equivalent certifications.
  • AMSA Coxswain Certificate Grade 1, or equivalent

We encourage applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, First Nations peoples, Defence veterans, and people from all backgrounds, experiences and perspectives.

Salary: The salary varies for this position as we are recruiting in multiple regional locations and job grades. The salary process is based on skills, abilities, and experience required.

What you can expect:

At Ocean Infinity, we believe in creating equal opportunities for all, celebrating each and everyone’s differences.  We are driven by transforming the industry, through our technology, thoughts, behaviours and actions.  Being inclusive and respectful to all is fundamental to who we are.  It is the right thing to do and enables innovation and creativity to thrive.

There is more work to be done, and we know that we aren’t perfect, but our commitment to these values is unwavering. They are central to our mission and the impact we have on the industry, meaning, we cannot live without them.
