Systems Engineer

The Role

• Support, administer, and improve core infrastructure across server, cloud, virtualisation, storage, backup, and identity environments.
• Maintain the performance, availability, and security of enterprise systems that underpin day-to-day university operations.
• Provide strong BAU systems support while also contributing to infrastructure uplift, upgrade, and transformation projects.
• Monitor systems, troubleshoot incidents, perform root cause analysis, and implement long-term fixes to improve reliability.
• Work across technologies such as Windows Server, Microsoft 365, Azure, Active Directory, VMware, backup platforms, and related infrastructure tools.
• Support patching, system upgrades, vulnerability remediation, and security best practice across the environment.
• Contribute to disaster recovery, backup integrity, business continuity, and capacity planning activities.
• Partner with internal stakeholders and IT teams to deliver effective technical solutions and a high standard of service.
• Create and maintain clear technical documentation, standards, and operational procedures.
• Identify opportunities for automation, optimisation, and continuous improvement across systems and processes.

About You

• Proven experience in a Systems Engineer, Systems Administrator, or similar infrastructure-focused role.
• Strong hands-on experience supporting enterprise systems across on-prem and cloud environments.
• Solid knowledge of technologies such as Windows Server, Active Directory, Azure, Microsoft 365, VMware, storage, and backup solutions.
• Experience supporting core infrastructure in a medium to large, multi-user environment.
• Strong troubleshooting skills, with the ability to prioritise issues and work methodically through technical problems.
• Good understanding of infrastructure security, patching, access management, backup, and disaster recovery principles.
• Comfortable balancing operational support with project-based work and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with both technical teams and non-technical stakeholders.
• A proactive, service-oriented approach with a genuine interest in delivering reliable and secure technology outcomes.
• Experience working in education, university, or similarly complex environments will be highly regarded.
