The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is seeking to fill several Technical Team Leader (EL 1) and IT Delivery Leads (EL 1) roles within Technology and Security Division (TSD).
These are ongoing, permanent positions at the Executive Level 1 classification levels. Successful applicants can work full-time hours out of our offices located in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra (Belconnen), Hobart, Melbourne (Docklands), Perth and Sydney, although a hybrid model of working from home and in the office applies.
About the business area
The Technology and Security Division is responsible for the technical infrastructure and applications that drive the work of the ABS. The team is responsible for the design, implementation, administration and maintenance of ABS’ applications, middleware, cloud and premise-based infrastructure.
The purpose of the Technology and Security Division is to secure, build, deliver and maintain ICT infrastructure and platforms in support of ABS’ mission of collecting, collating, and disseminating official statistics to support decision making across Australia’s public and private sectors.
The branch consists of over 400 people working across State/Territory capitals and ABS regional offices.
The five branches in the division are Security and Infrastructure Branch, Major Projects Branch, Technology Applications and Capability Branch, and IT Strategy and Architecture which manage ICT services for all of ABS’ corporate, statistical service and data services divisions.

About the roles
As a Technical Team Lead or IT Delivery Lead you will work in partnership with ABS business areas and with external stakeholders and suppliers to build technical capability, lead an effective group of ICT professionals, manage risk and deliver strategic IT projects in support of ABS business areas.
ICT staff within our Technology and Security Division (TSD) work on a range of interesting and innovative areas, and we are looking to fill roles across several sections.
Technical Team Lead have the opportunity to undertake technical work, will have a strong focus on hands-on ICT activity, with varying degrees of staff and project management responsibilities depending on the role.
Technical Team and Delivery Lead positions will lead Agile teams for the delivery of technical solutions and general project management, requiring skills including collaboration, teamwork, problem solving and critical thinking.

Data Acquisition Modernisation
The ABS recently commenced its Data Acquisition strategic initiative to modernise ABS data collection capabilities and accelerate our use of digital technologies. This includes delivering systems changes, channel uplift as well as cloud uplift to meet expanded business needs. You will be part of a program of work to truly advance the way ABS engages with internal and external stakeholders through technology,
Some of the key projects you may lead include:
Digital Solutions for Expenditure Data
Lead the technical delivery for a new digital diary for the Household Expenditure Survey using modern cloud technologies and machine learning capabilities.
Confirmit to Cloud
Work with a range of stakeholders including vendors to undertake detailed assessment, planning and design to migrate our on-premise survey instrument build tool (Forsta Horizons) to the cloud.
Data acquisition platform uplift of Monthly Population Survey
Design and deliver the system changes required to modernise the data acquisition platform for our largest household survey collecting vital information about Australia’s workforce, the Monthly Population Survey (MPS).
