Job Summary:
This role involves building, maintaining and developing a portfolio of accounts within the national Professional Lines team. The candidate will focus on Management Lines business including both primary and excess Directors & Officers' liability insurance, underwriting mid-market to large, including publicly listed Australian entities. They will secure profitable renewals and generate new business, in line with agreed area/segment strategies, and within agreed processes and risk appetite. They will spend the majority of their time underwriting decisions, managing accounts and account plans, contributing to business development activities in addition to assisting the Underwriting Manager with strategy development and portfolio management where necessary.
For the Senior Underwriter, they will operate with significant underwriting authority, exercising independent judgement on complex risks while ensuring alignment with agreed risk appetite, underwriting standards and portfolio strategy. The role combines technical underwriting, portfolio management and strong broker engagement to drive profitable growth. They will be required to assist with referrals and provide technical guidance, share knowledge and offer support to more junior team members as needed.
The role can be Sydney or Melbourne-based.
Job Duties:
• Leading or playing a major role in managing and developing an agreed portfolio of accounts in order to maximise profitable revenue potential from new and renewal business and achieve agreed business targets.
• Managing customer interactions in an efficient, courteous and timely manner in order to deliver high standards of customer satisfaction.
• Reviewing allocated complex, specialist cases or scheme opportunities and deliver underwriting decisions, following agreed processes at the designated authority level, in order to secure profitable business within the agreed risk appetite.
• Leading and/or contributing to technical audits and peer review processes as required to support and enable the maintenance of an effective control environment.
• Contributing to the production of new policy wordings or reviews of existing policy wordings to ensure policy documentation is current and accurate.
• Leading or contributing to the development and monitoring of account plans, gaining agreement to and implementing them in order to secure renewals and optimise profitable new business growth potential at individual account level.
• Identifying, recommending and leading or contributing to the implementation of marketing activities, business development initiatives etc. to increase overall revenue, 'share of wallet' and business mix in line with agreed account plans.
• Managing complaints within own authority level in an appropriate fashion to maintain quality and continuity of relationships.
• Contributing to the wider development of effective business strategies, priorities and market propositions, drawing on own knowledge, understanding and interpretation of local markets, competitors and Accounts.
• Actively engaging in the identification, prioritization, negotiation and winning of new Account relationships in line with agreed business strategies and delegated authorities.
• Providing expert advice, guidance and coaching to less qualified and/or experienced team members to address technical referrals and raise standards and expertise across the team.
• Assisting Underwriting Manager with both analysis and strategy development of the D&O portfolio.
Identifying and promoting additional learning and development opportunities both internally and externally.
Qualifications
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
• University graduate with minimum 2 years' (Underwriter) or 5+ years' (Senior Underwriter) experience in the insurance industry and preference for CII/ANZIIF.
• Strong technical capabilities across complex and large D&O risks.
• Maintain a high level of professionalism, integrity and trust.
• Ability to plan, prioritize, and organize work; effectively resolve conflict among priorities.
• Excellent relationship building and stakeholder management skills.
• Strong communication skills.
• Analytical mindset and results focused.
