Job Description - Work Inspector - Substation Construction

About the role

Band 3 Role – Salary offering to be discussed with the preferred candidate based on skills and experience, Overtime is available.

TasNetworks is seeking an experienced Work Inspector – Substation Construction to support the safe, high‑quality delivery of construction activities across the North West Transmission Developments (NWTD) project. In this field‑based role, you will provide on‑site oversight, technical assurance, and quality verification for substation augmentation and major upgrade works, ensuring all activities meet TasNetworks’ design standards, safety requirements, and project milestones.

Working closely with contractors, project engineers, commissioning teams, and site supervisors, you will help ensure that civil, structural, and electrical (primary and secondary systems) works are constructed to specification, risks are managed effectively, and all activities support the safe and reliable operation of the Tasmanian network. This role is critical to maintaining construction quality, protecting network integrity, and ensuring the successful delivery of major project outcomes.

What you’ll do

  • Inspect substation construction works — Conduct routine and detailed inspections of civil, structural, and electrical works including foundations, steel structures, overhead bus, switchgear, instrument transformers (CTs & VTs), earthing systems, cable installations, conduits, and control building fit‑outs.

  • Verify compliance — Ensure construction activities follow approved drawings, specifications, network standards, and quality requirements.

  • Monitor contractor performance — Assess workmanship, identify non‑conformances, and escalate issues promptly to the Construction Manager.

  • Review construction documentation — Verify red‑line drawings, as‑built updates, and construction records for accuracy and completeness.

  • Perform inspection hold points — Coordinate and undertake inspections in line with ITPs/ITRs throughout construction.

  • Support safe work practices — Identify unsafe behaviours or conditions, intervene where appropriate, and escalate matters requiring management attention.

  • Coordinate with internal teams — Support outage planning, switching windows, and access requirements as directed by the Construction Manager.

  • Assist commissioning readiness — Ensure construction prerequisites are met to support future commissioning activities.

  • Provide reporting and documentation — Complete inspection reports, verification records, and quality assurance documentation to support project governance.

About you

If you have a strong substation construction background, practical field experience, and a commitment to safe, high‑quality work — you may be exactly who we’re looking for. You are an experienced substation construction professional who brings solid technical capability, confidence working independently across dispersed project sites, and a clear understanding of civil, structural, and electrical installation requirements within transmission substations.

You bring a collaborative, solutions‑focused approach to working with contractors and project teams, and you’re comfortable identifying issues, escalating risks, and supporting corrective actions. You understand primary & secondary system drawings, and construction standards, and you take pride in ensuring work is delivered safely, efficiently, and to specification.

You will also bring:

  • Certificate III in Electrotechnology

  • Experience in transmission substation construction, maintenance, or inspection

  • Ability to interpret technical documentation, drawings, and schematics

  • A current driver’s licence, EWP licence, and other relevant industry qualifications

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Capacity to work across remote or dispersed project sites

  • Commitment to safety, quality, and compliance
