Youth Worker  

Permanent Part-Time | 24 hours per week | Karratha, WA | SCHADS Award – Level 4 

Why This Role Matters 

Youth Workers play a vital role in creating safety, stability and connection for young people who are navigating significant challenges. Your presence on shift contributes directly to a young person’s sense of belonging, routine and trust. Every interaction and every moment of consistency helps young people build confidence, develop life skills and move toward healthier and more independent futures. This role matters because you become part of the team that shows young people what safe adults look like. 

About the role  

This position operates on a rotating roster that includes morning, afternoon and sleepover shifts. Morning shifts run from 7.00am to 3.00pm. Afternoon shifts run from 4.00pm to 11.00pm. After the afternoon shift, staff complete a non-active sleepover and then resume duties from 6.30am to 7.30am to complete handover with the incoming morning team.  

This structure supports consistent and responsive care for young people and requires applicants who are comfortable working across varied shift types including sleepovers. 

How you will make an impact 

  • Build positive, trusting relationships with young people and support them to feel safe and empowered 

  • Provide calm, respectful guidance that supports young people to work toward their goals 

  • Maintain clear, accurate notes and contribute to a consistent, supportive service environment 

  • Assist young people to access services, supports and community connections 

  • Support young people with daily living tasks, routines and skill development 

  • Keep the space safe, clean and welcoming, including completing required cleaning tasks 

  • Respond professionally to situations that arise, using de-escalation and safety strategies 

  • Work independently during shifts, with support available when  

What you will bring 

  • Certificate III or IV in Youth Work, Community Services or a related field, or equivalent experience 

  • Experience supporting at-risk young people or working in a residential setting (desirable) 

  • Understanding of trauma, adolescent development and the challenges young people may face 

  • Confidence responding to behaviours that challenge, using calm and respectful approaches 

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build healthy, supportive relationships 

  • A commitment to The Salvation Army’s mission, values and inclusive practice 

  • Reliability, resilience and a genuine passion for supporting young people 

  • WA Driver’s Licence 

  • Current Employee Working with Children’s Check 

  • First Aid Certificate (or willingness to obtain)
