Your Opportunity

Be part of YouthBeat, a well-established and highly regarded outreach service supporting young people aged under 18 who are at risk across Perth’s inner city and Northbridge. Based in Northbridge, this is an on-site position working part-time across active Friday and Saturday overnight shifts, where you will engage directly with vulnerable young people in community settings and help divert them from risk.

In this dynamic, street-based role, you will deliver brief interventions, harm reduction, safety planning and practical supports including transport and referrals, while building trusted relationships with young people experiencing complex challenges. Working alongside key partners such as WA Police, the Department of Communities and the Nyoongar Outreach Service, you will be part of a collaborative response focused on improving safety and long-term outcomes. YouthBeat is widely recognised for its impact and reputation in supporting street-present young people, offering both immediate assistance and pathways into ongoing case management support.

Students working toward relevant qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply

Please note this is not a disability support role.

Your Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver assertive street-based outreach across Northbridge and Perth CBD, engaging with young people through foot patrols and vehicle-based support.

  • Conduct brief risk assessments, safety planning and provide trauma-informed, person-centred interventions to reduce harm and immediate risk.

  • Build rapport quickly with street-present young people and support engagement using culturally secure and solution-focused approaches.

  • Provide safe and appropriate transport to approved locations, ensuring the wellbeing of young people at all times.

  • Collaborate effectively with key stakeholders including WA Police, Crisis Care, Nyoongar Outreach Service and internal teams.

  • Facilitate Youth at Risk Strategy (YARS) shifts and contribute to coordinated, multi-agency responses for vulnerable youth.

  • Complete accurate and timely administrative tasks including case notes, data entry, reporting and handover documentation.

Requirements for Success

  • Relevant qualification in Youth Work, Social Work, Social Sciences, Psychology or similar, or equivalent experience (students working toward these qualifications encouraged).

  • Demonstrated experience in outreach, working with at-risk or homeless young people, including those affected by AOD or mental health challenges.

  • Strong crisis intervention, de-escalation and risk assessment skills with the ability to remain calm under pressure.

  • Ability to build trust and engage effectively with young people facing complex barriers, including First Nations and CALD communities.

  • Proven capacity to work both independently and collaboratively within a small, multidisciplinary team environment.

  • Well-developed communication, rapport-building and interpersonal skills, alongside solid administrative and computer proficiency.

  • Strong professional boundaries, sound judgement and the ability to manage competing priorities in a high-pressure, overnight outreach setting.

  • Before starting work with us, you will need to undertake a national police history check, qualifications, and referee checks, and have a clearance to work with children/vulnerable people.

Your Benefits

To ensure our employees feel valued, empowered, and celebrated, we provide a range of employee benefits including:

  • Rewarding work – every day you know you’re making a real difference

  • Not-for-profit salary packaging, reducing your tax (details via AccessPay)

  • Free external, confidential counselling and access to chaplaincy support

  • Volunteering opportunities

  • Opportunity to purchase additional annual leave

  • Extra leave including: Mission Australia Thank You Day & Work Anniversary Day off
