School of Electrical Engineering, Computing and Mathematical Sciences (EECMS)

The School of Electrical Engineering, Computing, and Mathematical Sciences (EECMS) combines computational expertise in mathematics, statistics and computing with applications in materials science, power engineering, quantum physics, signal processing, astronomy, industrial optimisation and data science. EECMS contains several major research centres and institutes including the Curtin Institute for Data Science, the Curtin Centre for Optimisation and Decision Science and the Curtin Institute for Radio Astronomy. These initiatives lead significant research and development programs with industry and government partners across the mining, energy, agriculture, health and defence sectors. In addition to undergraduate courses in mathematics, statistics and data science, EECMS offers an accredited Actuarial Science course, one of only seven in Australia and the only one in Western Australia, with a strong focus on applied statistics and data science.

Your new role

An exciting opportunity exists for a Fellow Actuary with industry experience to teach within the Actuarial Science courses. Accredited by the Actuaries Institute, the course offers exemptions from subjects in the Foundation and Actuary Programs of the actuarial profession’s education program, providing the opportunity to fast-track qualification as an Actuary.

Delivered by the discipline of Mathematical Science, the Actuarial Science teaching team brings extensive applied and research capabilities to the Curtin Actuarial Science courses. The team is highly engaged with the local actuarial and wider business community, has a strong foundation in statistical and data analysis and leverages their wide-ranging industry experience to deliver this highly regarded course.

This is a fantastic opportunity for an Actuary with extensive quantitative, problem solving, statistical and analytical experience, whether an industry-based Actuary wishing to transfer to academia or an existing academic wishing to further their teaching and research career.

You will be appointed as either a Teaching Academic (teaching only); Teaching/Research Academic; or a Professor of Practice. The title Professor of Practice may be used for senior industry professionals.

You will play a major role in teaching subjects required under the Foundation and Actuary Programs of the Actuaries Institute by providing excellent, student-centred teaching, including supervising student research projects at Undergraduate, Masters and (if relevant) PhD levels. You will also contribute to developing high quality curricula and assessments, including work-related activities. You will help build teaching capacity of peers and less experienced staff through knowledge transfer and mentoring opportunities, and help build relationships with industry, partner universities and international campuses.

If undertaking a teaching/research role, your teaching will be underpinned by an active research program which supports the activities of the university, driving real-world impact and inspiring students. You will also contribute to building research capacity within the Actuarial Science courses.

This is a continuing (permanent) role with the option of working either full-time or part-time.

A market adjustment, commensurate with experience, may be applied to base salary for the preferred candidate.
