Job Description - Energy Trader

Execute trades, develop strategies, and manage risks for a leading global energy and commodity group. Our client, one of the world's leading independent energy and commodity groups, is seeking a dynamic and skilled Energy Trader to join their Melbourne-based team. The Energy Trader will be responsible for executing trades, developing market strategies, and managing risks associated with energy commodities. This role requires a deep understanding of energy markets, strong analytical skills, and the ability to make quick, informed decisions. The successful candidate will work closely with other traders, analysts, and senior management to optimise trading strategies and maximise profitability. Key Responsibilities

  • Execute trades in energy commodities, including electricity, gas, and renewable energy certificates.
  • Develop and implement trading strategies to capitalise on market opportunities and mitigate risks.
  • Monitor market conditions, trends, and news to inform trading decisions.
  • Analyse market data and trading performance to identify areas for improvement.
  • Manage trading positions and exposure in accordance with the company's risk management policies.
  • Collaborate with the research and analytics team to develop market insights and forecasts.
  • Maintain relationships with market participants, including brokers, suppliers, and customers.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements and company policies.
  • Prepare and present reports on trading activities and performance to senior management.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of trading systems and tools.
  • Conduct post-trade analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of trading strategies.
  • Participate in industry events and networking activities to stay informed about market developments.
  • Support the continuous improvement of trading processes and methodologies.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior traders and interns.
  • Contribute to the overall strategic planning and direction of the trading desk.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Business, Engineering, or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in energy trading, preferably within a reputable trading firm or energy company.
  • Strong understanding of energy markets, including electricity, gas, and renewables.
  • Proven track record of profitable trading and effective risk management.
  • Excellent analytical and quantitative skills.
  • Proficiency in trading platforms and software, such as Eikon, Bloomberg, or similar tools.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and make quick, informed decisions.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and compliance in the energy sector.
