Job Description - Occupational Therapist

About the role 

Mater Clarence Street Therapeutic Residential Program at Mater Health are looking for an Occupational Therapist to join the team in a permanent and part-time (19 hours a week) position. 

As a member of the Clarence Street team, you will provide Occupational Therapy support to young people participating in a longer-term residential program offering therapeutic interventions ‘Thread’, for young people 13 – 17 years who are experiencing problematic substance use. Thread is a 5-bed residential program which aims to provide a safe and supportive residential environment for young people to experience life without alcohol and/or other drugs. It provides a structured holistic program which includes individual support and a skill-based group program as well as recreational and educational/vocational activities.

The Occupational Therapist will support the team to deliver group therapy programs in line with occupational therapy goals.  This role will also support young people to transition back into the community once they exit the program. Clarence Street is part of the Mater Young Adult Health Centre and offers a range of services to support young people and their families.

Salary range: $34.34 - $51.89 (Health Practitioner Level 3) per hour plus superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900

What you’ll be doing

  • Provide individual counselling, advocacy and support to young people participating in the therapeutic residential program.
  • Ensure that interventions are consistent with a framework of harm reduction, relapse prevention and strength-based approaches
  • Work in partnership with families, other relevant agencies such as schools, TAFE colleges other AOD services to provide effective collaborative interventions for young people
  • Implement trauma informed care into practice within the clinical setting including sensory interventions
  • Ensure clinical practice reflects the developmental needs of young people
  • Provide input into the development of clinical practices, procedures and protocols
  • Demonstrated clinical experience in providing youth alcohol and other drug interventions to young people in an AOD residential setting
  • Ensure team data entry, reporting and all written communication is completed
  • Develop clinical practice knowledge and expertise through active learning within the team
  • Engage in professional development and research activities

About you 

  • You will hold a tertiary degree in Occupational Therapy
  • General Registration via the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • Relevant postgraduate training and/or qualification in addiction studies is highly desirable
  • Demonstrated clinical experience in providing youth alcohol and other drug interventions to young people in an AOD residential setting
  • Demonstrated understanding of contemporary treatment modalities for young people impacted by alcohol and other drugs
  • Experience in developing, facilitating and evaluating group therapy programs in line with occupational therapy goals.
  • Hold a Current First Aid Certificate
  • Have a C class driver’s license
  • This position will require you be part of an on-call roster providing after hours support for the residential services.
