Position: Business Development Manager (Part-Time)

Term: Part time – to be negotiated up to 3 – 4 days per week.

Start Date: August 2024

End Date: 12 months later

Location: ACT, Australia 

Reports To: Board Chair (Karen Lee) 

Salary: $41.50 per hour (pro-rata $82 229 per annum) + 11% Superannuation.

ORGANISATIONAL CONTEXT 

ANCA (Australian National Capital Artists Inc) was formed in 1989 with assistance from the ACT Government, in response to strong community need for affordable artist studios. The objects for which ANCA is established, according to ANCA's Constitution, are:

 

(a)       to manage and operate campuses in which artists may occupy space for the purpose of practising art of any kind 

 

(b)       in pursuance of the foregoing object to provide studio accommodation, gallery accommodation and associated facilities for visual artists, arts groups, and arts organisations in the Australian Capital Territory; and 

 

(c)        to promote the visual arts. 

 

POSITION SUMMARY 

 

ANCA (Australian National Capital Artists Inc) is looking for a part-time Business Development Manager to help grow ANCA’s revenue and play a leading role in delivering our vision of facilitating a vibrant Canberra arts scene through the provision of independent artist studios and gallery. 

 

The Business Development Manager reports to the Chair, and is a part-time position based in ACT. This position is required to meet annual Key Performance Indicators (see below).

Working with the Chair, the Business Development Manager will lead ANCA’s strategic fundraising and revenue generation activities to drive support and engagement from high-value donors/audiences.  This includes a focus on major donors, trusts, foundations, and partnerships with sponsors to establish, nurture and maximise all corporate, government and philanthropic opportunities.

 

The Business Development Manager is also responsible for working with the Chair and/or Board on all funding applications at local, state and federal levels, including the creation and management of a funding and acquittals calendar.

 

The Business Development Manager should also explore and develop other opportunities for revenue generation, such as retail activities.

 

The ideal candidate will have high level business development experience, particularly in the arts and/or creative industries. This includes achieving revenue targets, a track record of nurturing long-term business partnerships, and demonstrated success in funding applications and sponsorship programs. 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  1. Contribute to the success and effectiveness of ANCA’s operations as part of the core team in a position of strategic leadership, working closely with the Chair, Board, Studio Manager and Gallery Manager.
  2. Drive ANCA’s philanthropic program to maximise opportunities from Major Donors, Corporates and Trusts and Foundations, including managing a pro-active Trust and Foundations program to significantly grow income throughout the year. This includes appropriate stewardship of the program with an aim of building long term funding relationships.
  3. Work with Chair to strategically identify, approach and develop Major Donors and Corporates to secure funding support for ANCA programs.
  4. Establish and maintain effective relationships with donors, corporates, partners and stakeholders to ensure that ANCA is meeting all revenue and fundraising targets.
  5. Manage existing relationships with partners that provide philanthropic support to ANCA, and find opportunities to re-engage historic donors and partners of ANCA through events with a view to reactivating support.
  6. Provide strategic advice on funding and sector trends, and identify opportunities to ensure the organisation is well positioned to meet its strategic goals. 
  7. Create and maintain an effective funding pipeline and grants calendar, including the research and development for appropriate grant proposals.
  8. Work with the Chair to manage, facilitate, write, and submit compelling and tailored funding applications. 
  9. Coordinate funding acquittals calendar and liaise with Chair and team members to ensure to complete funding acquittals on time and to the highest possible standard.
  10. Identify appropriate retail activities , prepare business cases for the Board, and implement as approved.
  11. Create and manage a business development database and keep track of all revenue generating activities relationships.
  12. Represent ANCA externally at meetings and conferences as required at key fundraising and philanthropic events.
  13. Write board reports on Philanthropic activity including pipeline, tracking against budget and analysis of return on investment.
  14. Work with the Chair to ensure that ANCA has appropriate policies, procedures and processes in place to maximise resources and impact.
  15. Contribute to the effective operations of the office and administrative functions, including promoting a positive and supportive organisational environment in order to ensure the efficient operation of the organisation and successful delivery of the ANCA program.

 

SELECTION CRITERIA

  1. Demonstrable business acumen and operation of a commercially operated organisation.
  2. Experience in the not-for-profit sector, preferably in the arts and/or creative industries.
  3. Demonstrable success in identifying business opportunities and bringing them to fruition.
  4. A proven track record in securing income from trusts and foundation, corporate or major donors, including prospecting, engagement and pitching.
  5. Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, with a proven ability to develop genuine long-term relationships with a wide range of stakeholders to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes.
  6. Previous experience managing grants and funding processes, including writing tenders and/or Research & Development grant proposals, obtaining successful outcomes and maintaining funding pipelines.
  7. Extensive understanding of, and experience in, writing successful funding applications and proposals, including government funding applications at local, state and national levels.
  8. Experience editing and formatting online templates, complex documents and using digital platforms and government portals for submissions, such as SmartyGrants.
  9. Demonstrated high-level organisational skills with the ability to work closely with the Chair and Board, take direction, set and monitor own as well as team goals, work under pressure, plan own workload and delegate effectively. 
  10. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including well-developed funding application and reporting skills and the ability to openly and effectively communicate and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders including the ANCA team, staff, contractors, board members, funders, sponsors, donors, partners and all other stakeholders. 
  11. A high level of autonomy, personal integrity and demonstrated good judgement with excellent leadership abilities and results focused approach to work. 
  12. High level of digital and online literacy, including experience with Microsoft Office, CRMs, Google Docs for business, Zoom and MYOB. 
  13. Demonstrated knowledge of or interest in the Australian and International visual and contemporary arts sectors. 
  14. Tertiary qualification in a related discipline such as arts, communications, event management, promotion and/or equivalent transferable skills (preferable).

 

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS 

 

  1. Successful management of the ANCA philanthropic program, working to meet financial objectives set by the Chair and the Board.
  2. Managing a proactive Trust and Foundations program to significantly grow income throughout the year.
  3. Strategic identification, approach and development of Major Donors and Corporates to secure funding support, to meet financial objectives set by the Chair and the Board.
  4. Establish and maintain effective relationships with new and existing stakeholders and partners to ensure that ANCA is meeting all revenue and fundraising targets.
  5. Writing, winning and acquitting grants and funding proposals throughout the year.
  6. Acquitting all funding on time and to the highest levels of excellence.
  7. Identifying and bringing to fruition commercial business opportunities that increase ANCA’s net income.
  8. Create and manage a business development database and keep track of all revenue generating activities relationships.
  9. Successful management of ANCA’s processes and systems with regard to partnership and engagement management.
  10. Successful team work and contribution to positive workplace culture.
