Job Description - Clinical Nurse Specialist - Emergency

Your role at St John of God Midland Hospital

Our Emergency Department is looking for a Clinical Nurse Specialist to lead and manage the nursing and patient care assistant team to deliver patient centred care and to achieve optimal patient outcomes within the allocated resources. St John of God Midland Public and Private Hospital provides high quality public and private services to people living in the east metropolitan and Wheat belt regions.

The Clinical Nurse Specialist – Emergency Department (ED) has direct responsibility for improving and maintaining standards, developing solutions and delivering outcomes consistent with services and organisation imperatives, targets, and the Mission and Values of St John of God Health Care (SJGHC). In this position you will work alongside the Nurse Manager of the Emergency Department while providing a consultant and liaison service within the area of expertise to relevant internal and external customers and consumers.

The Position

  • Is aware of and works in accordance with SJGHC policies and procedures.

  • Promotes and maintains responsibility for professional practice standards to ensure the safe delivery of quality patient care.

  • Has direct responsibility for developing, improving and maintaining standards, developing solutions and delivering outcomes consistent with service and organisational imperatives and targets.

  • Maintains advanced clinical skills relevant to area of practice, and acts as a clinical resource for all nursing, and where appropriate, other caregivers.

  • Monitors compliance with clinical standards and initiates corrective action as required.

  • Undertakes rounds in the Emergency Department in order to facilitate planning for and response to the clinical requirements of the shift.

  • Identify patients at risk of clinical deterioration and ensure appropriate planning is in place to manage any issues that may arise.

  • Negotiates patient care with medical and allied health professionals and other agencies as required.

  • Liaises with Nurse Manager and/or CNS in other areas in order to provide advice/support in the assessment and management of patients.

  • Demonstrates both clinical and administrative leadership through effective communication, interpersonal skills, change management ability and the development of a high-performance team that exhibits a culture of professional accountability and quality service.

  • Implements and supports the Nursing & Midwifery Standards of Excellence at within their area of specialty.

  • Demonstrates both clinical and administrative leadership through effective communication, interpersonal skills, change management ability and the development of a high-performance team that exhibits a culture of professional accountability and quality service. Engages caregivers to ensure the efficient and effective management of all areas of responsibility.

  • Promotes and maintains collaborative relationships with accredited Medical Practitioners.

  • Accepts accountability for ensuring the service is compliant with relevant Acts, Agreements, Contracts, Licensing requirements, National Standards, Policies and Procedures.

  • Actively participates in all relevant clinical and non-clinical committees within and externally to the Hospital.

  • In conjunction with Nurse Manager – Emergency Department, takes responsibility for HR processes including performance management, performance development including probation reviews, grievances, caregiver engagement, productivity, maintains accountability for the ongoing financial management and utilisation in line with agreed budgetary parameters and performance targets.

  • Recommends and implements new initiatives that will promote business development.

  • In consultation with the Chief Executive Officer, Director of Nursing, Deputy Director of Nursing, and Director Medical Services; actively contributes to marketing the service and supports the ongoing development of the Hospital.

  • Accesses and interprets data to monitor and improve the quality of the service or identify new opportunities in order to grow the Ministry and provide a strategic direction and vision for the service.

  • Participates in the implementation and maintenance of a workforce model/model of care that enables quality of care to be maintained as well as implementing appropriate levels of workforce skills and workforce development. In consultation with the Nurse Manager – Emergency Department supports and promotes a recruitment; retention and succession plan to achieve appropriate skill mix profile and budgeted FTE within the Hospital, in accordance with EEO legislation and hospital policies.

  • Monitors non-human resourcing in the relevant area, to ensure appropriate usage and availability of equipment and supplies.

  • Achieves mandatory annual Hospital competencies and assumes responsibility for record maintenance.

  • Communicate effectively with all customers and patients using the appropriate channels, utilising appropriate formal and informal channels of communication.

  • Not to interfere, bypass or misuse any system or equipment provided for health, safety and welfare purposes.

  • Take all actions to avoid, eliminate or minimize hazards and report all incidents / hazards / injuries.

Position Requirements

  • A willingness and capacity to embrace the Mission and Values of St John of God Health Care.

  • Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency as a Registered Nurse.

  • Post registration qualification in ED specialty, or progression towards.

  • Advanced level clinical skills and demonstrated clinical leadership in an Emergency Nursing environment

  • Demonstrated skills in clinical teaching, coaching and performance management.

  • Demonstrated understanding and commitment to quality improvement and the National Safety & Quality Health Service Standards process.

  • Well-developed skills in communication, including conflict resolution, negotiation and problem solving in a multidisciplinary health care environment.

  • Demonstrated experience as a change agent.

  • A knowledge of relevant legislation and professional standards, including Nurses Act, Code of Conduct, Occupational Safety & Health, Equal Employment Opportunity.

  • Salary: $137,294 pro rata for part time, plus 12% superannuation

  • Permanent part time positions available, working 70 hours per fortnight (0.92FTE)
