Join Our Team at The Port Macquarie Koala Hospital! 

Are you passionate about wildlife conservation and looking for a meaningful role where you can make a difference?  Koala Conservation Australia (KCA) invites applications for the position of HR, WHS and Compliance Officer which will be based at the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital.

KCA Limited is a not-for-profit organisation that is run by a dedicated team of approximately 15 staff and 200 volunteers committed to koala conservation and restoring their natural habitats. 

 What you’ll be doing: 

  • Providing HR support and guidance to managers and employees on various HR policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Supporting managers in volunteer recruitment and selection, including posting jobs, screening resumes, arranging interviews, and making role recommendations.
  • Coordinate employee and volunteer onboarding to ensure a smooth transition for new workers.
  • Manage employee and volunteer relations issues, including conflict resolution, disciplinary actions, and grievance procedures.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of HR initiatives, including compliance processes and procedures, training and development, and employee engagement programs.
  • Reviewing and improving incident reporting processes, documentation, and governance to optimise incident management
  • Assisting with the implementation of a consistent WHS audit and risk framework and all related supporting systems and processes, minimising risk through continuous improvement
  • Establishing and implementing an agreed consultation model to support improved workplace outcomes for staff and volunteers
  • Acting as first point of contact for staff and volunteers for WHS and HR related enquiries and incidents
  • Effectively and efficiently managing workplace incidents, hazards, claims, and return to work programs
  • Creating and delivering workshops and presentations to engage and update stakeholders, employees and volunteers
  • Supporting compliance and licencing management through the reporting process, and referring to external agencies as required
  • Ensuring updates and decisions are regularly communicated to all key stakeholders within agreed time frames

Who you are: 

To be successful in this role, you will have: 

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in HR and WHS preferred or a minimum 3+ years practical experience in a similar role
  • Strong organisational and multitasking abilities. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Proficiency in Office 365, Outlook, Teams and ability to learn new software systems. 
  • A passion for wildlife conservation and commitment to the mission of  Koala Conservation Australia
  • Working previously with in a volunteer organisation will be viewed favourably

Generous donations following the bushfires helped us realise our goal of building a Wild Koala Breeding facility. Named ‘Guulabaa’ (pronounced Goo-lah-bah), the complex is due to open later this year and will house visitor-friendly Koala viewing platforms, interactive and educational exhibits and a shop. The Breeding Facility will include a state-of-the-art Koala clinic, and a laboratory for testing & scientific research. 

We have also received funding to rebuild our Koala Hospital to ensure we can continue to rescue, rehabilitate and release our wild koalas.  The Port Macquarie Koala Hospital is the oldest Koala Hospital in Australia and new retail, visitor experience and landscaping will showcase the continuing essential work we do to save the koala which are now an endangered species.

 Important Information: 

This is a temporary part time position for 12 months  (30 hours per week), working Monday to Friday. Some flexibility regarding actual work times exists, with core hours being 08.30 - 16.30

This role will initially be based at the Koala Hosptial Port Macquarie site and may relocate temporarily to the Guulabaa complex whilst redevelopment of the Port Macqaurie site takes place. The timing of this is yet to be determined.
