Job Description - Laboratory Technician

What’s the job?  
As the Laboratory Technician, you will report to Kristina, National Laboratory Manager and join a passionate team committed to ensuring Torrens University Australia delivers an exceptional student learning experience. 

 

The Laboratory Technician plays a key role in supporting the delivery of high-quality, safe, and engaging learning experiences in specialist teaching laboratories across the Health and Education vertical. Working under the line management of the National Laboratory Manager and day-to-day supervision of a Laboratory Coordinator, the Laboratory Technician operates with a high degree of autonomy and technical expertise in ensuring resource readiness for laboratory classes as part of the laboratory team. 

 

The Laboratory Technician also contributes to the development of operational procedures, supports student learning activities, and provides technical expertise to ensure smooth laboratory operations.

 

In this role, you will:  

  • Prepare laboratory environments and equipment in readiness for teaching sessions, simulations, and assessments. 

  • Troubleshoot equipment issues promptly advise laboratory coordinator 

  • Support Laboratory Coordinators in the development and refinement of standard operating procedures. 

  • Assist the National Lab manager and/or the Laboratory Coordinator in daily operations, supporting the team, and potentially making decisions or taking charge of situations in the Laboratory Coordinators absence 

  • Manage the setup and pack down of practical sessions, ensuring all resources and equipment are prepared to specification and stored, recycled or disposed of appropriately after sessions. 

  • Oversee stock usage and advise Laboratory Coordinators on supply levels and reorder requirements. 

 

This is a casual position located at our Flinders Street Campus. Availability must include Monday through to Friday approximately 28 hours spread across these business days.

As this role involves manual handling tasks, the recruitment process will include a functional capability assessment for the preferred candidate. This step aligns with the updated procedures for this position. 

 

Who you are: 

To be successful in this role, you will have: 

  • Minimum of a Bachelor qualification in Health Sciences, Biomedical Science, Laboratory Technology, Nursing or a related discipline 

  • 2 years experience in a health, clinical, science or educational laboratory environment 

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills  

  • Ability to schedule and prioritise effectively 

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills 

  • Ability to work autonomously and with the team 

  • Appropriately qualified in the relevant discipline for level of teaching (qualified to at least one Qualification Standards level higher than the course of study being taught)
