About BDAC

BDAC is an ACCO (Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation) registered as a member under the umbrella of VACCHO (Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation) and represented nationally through NACCHO (National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation).

BDAC was founded to represent and provide services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living on Djaara Country.

BDAC has a responsibility to ensure growth of services, development of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, better and improved health outcomes for our people, improved quality of life and be a lead agency in providing self-determination employment and career pathways for Aboriginal people.

About The Position

Do you have a passion for working with Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community? Do you have lived experience or work experience in Social and Emotional Wellbeing or mental health and would like to work within a supportive organisation assisting Aboriginal or Torres Straight Islander people?

The Social & Emotional Wellbeing Worker is responsible for providing culturally appropriate support to individuals, families and the community affected by Mental Illness and for promoting healthy lifestyles, healthy choices, and preventative measures.

The Social and Emotional Wellbeing worker will work within a small BDAC team located at the Bendigo Locals Hub.

The Adult Mental Health and Wellbeing services, otherwise known as “Locals”, are a key recommendation from Victoria’s Royal Commission for mental health service. The Locals will act as front door to the mental health service system and will provide a continuum of care and support including clinical interventions, wellbeing supports, therapeutic support through an integrated mental health and alcohol and other drug framework approach. Mind’s Locals will be established in three locations: Dandenong, Melton, and Loddon-Campaspe. These services will have a no wrong door approach.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work alongside the Wellbeing Team at BDAC & co-locate within the Locals.
  • Develop and implement care plans, coordinating support services and setting goals for families.
  • Seek guidance from the Wellbeing Manager and team leaders, ensuring clients' needs are met and support networks are engaged.
  • Foster a discrimination-free workplace, prioritize health and safety, and collaborate within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Advocate for clients to access mainstream Wellbeing services, support community access to psychiatry, and promote clinic engagement.
  • Facilitate and support wellbeing promotion, education, and resource kits for carers, individuals, and families.
  • Promote Wellbeing Programs and BDAC externally, provide consultations, and inform key agencies about social and historical factors.
  • Regularly meet with stakeholders to develop initiatives improving outcomes for Aboriginal people.
  • Maintain current and comprehensive case notes, ensuring timely completion of all required forms and documents.

About You

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, the special requirements and LORE of Aboriginal people, with demonstrated ability to integrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural experiences, philosophy, and practice alongside the knowledge of historical misjustice that impact community today.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective high level working relationships with all key stakeholders both internal and external.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal Culture and the aboriginal community control health organisation (ACCHO) environment.
  • Knowledge and/or lived experience working with people with mental health issues, AOD (Alcohol and Other Drugs) issues, complex needs and interacting with families and carers.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Community Services sector and ability to build strong relationships with partners, service providers, agencies, and key stakeholders.
  • Understanding of case note writing and mandatory reporting.

Preferred / Desired / Mandatory Education, Training, and/or Competencies

  • Qualifications (minimum Certificate IV) in Mental Health, Peer Work, Social Work, Community Development, or other health related field and/or equivalent experience in a similar industry.
  • Experience working within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
  • Lived experience recognised and valued.
