Job Description - Part-time Senior Consultant - Transport Engineering

Company Description

At CrossleyTP, we’re a people-first transport planning consultancy helping communities, councils and project teams shape streets and places that work better for everyone.

We bring together transport planning, traffic engineering, data analysis and community engagement to support practical, evidence-informed decisions. Our work spans schools, streets, public spaces, development projects and transport strategies always with a focus on access, safety, comfort and real community outcomes.

We’re a small, collaborative team with big capability. We value curiosity, care, clear communication and thoughtful challenge and we’re looking for people who want their work to make a meaningful difference to how people move through and experience their neighbourhoods.

    Job Description

We’re looking for a senior traffic engineer with strong analytical capability to join our team in a part-time role. This role would suit someone who enjoys staying close to the technical work leading transport assessments, modelling intersections and networks, reviewing parking and access arrangements, and using GIS/spatial analytics to support transport planning opportunities and options.

You’ll work across a mix of development and infrastructure projects, providing practical advice that helps shape good transport outcomes.

    The opportunity

    • A rare part-time senior role focused on technical delivery and project ownership
    • Equivalent of 2–3 days per week, with genuine flexibility around hours. For example, an option for school-hours arrangements such as 10am–2pm
    • Hybrid working, ideally with availability to attend the office on some of our team office days
    • Stay hands-on with high-quality transport engineering work while taking responsibility for your projects
    • Opportunity to shape projects and mentor others

    Qualifications

    Essential Qualifications and Experience

    • Degree in Civil Engineering, Transport Planning, Urban Planning, Geography or a related discipline, ideally with transport-related modules; or equivalent formal qualifications, professional development or certifications relevant to traffic engineering, transport planning, modelling or transport analytics.
    • Demonstrated private consultancy experience leading and delivering Transport Impact Assessments for a broad range of land uses, including major developments, precinct planning and masterplanning projects.
    • Proven capability in SIDRA intersection and network modelling, including interpretation and application of results.
    • Experience undertaking parking and access assessments, including the application of relevant standards such as AS/NZS 2890.
    • Strong understanding and application of NSW transport planning, standards and approvals processes.
    • Experience using GIS tools (ArcGIS or QGIS) to support transport planning analysis, opportunity identification and option development.
    • Ability to independently manage and deliver technical workstreams and projects end-to-end.
    • Membership of a relevant professional body, such as TPA, Engineers Australia, Transport Planning Society, PIA or equivalent.

    Desirable Qualifications and Competencies

    • Formal training or recognised competency in SIDRA modelling
    • Accreditation or experience in Road Safety Audits
    • Chartered Engineer (CPEng or equivalent) or working towards chartership
    • Experience with operational or microsimulation modelling, such as VISSIM or AIMSUN
    • Familiarity with AutoCAD for reviewing, marking up or preparing simple transport engineering drawings
    • Experience working within or on behalf of a council / consent authority reviewing development applications or transport assessments
    • Experience providing technical guidance or mentoring to junior staff.

    Additional Information

As part of your application, please submit:

    • A brief cover letter (1–2 pages) outlining your experience and how you meet the key/essential competencies for this role
    • A project CV highlighting relevant projects, your role, and key outcomes

What we’re looking for in your application:

    • Clear examples of your experience delivering Transport Impact Assessments, including your role and level of responsibility.
    • Demonstrated experience with SIDRA modelling, including how you’ve applied results to inform design or planning outcomes.
    • Experience working within the NSW planning and approvals framework.
    • Examples of how you’ve used data, modelling or GIS to inform transport planning decisions.

We’re particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate independent technical capability and sound engineering judgement, rather than just project involvement.
