Job Description - Research Assistant and Training Coordinator

  • Data Science Collaborative Research Platform

  • This is a part-time (0.6 FTE) fixed-term position through to March 2027 with FTE salary in the range $83,776 - $93,121 (HEW 5), plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%.

  • Empower the research community by combining technical data science expertise with the delivery of impactful training programs and workshops across the data life cycle.

  • Leverage your R or Python proficiency to support diverse research studies, troubleshoot source code, and maintain critical digital applications in a collaborative, methodical environment.

  • Based at our picturesque and conveniently located St Lucia campus.

About This Opportunity 

The Research Assistant and Training Coordinator serves as a vital bridge between technical data science expertise and academic capability building. Within the Data Science Collaborative Research Platform, you will provide end-to-end support across the research data life cycle empowering the research community to harness data with confidence and precision.

Key responsibilities will include: 

Training Coordination and Development

  • Facilitate the end-to-end delivery of training programs and workshops. You will develop curriculum materials and instruct researchers on best-practice data science applications to enhance institutional data literacy.

Technical Research Assistance

  • Support the design and execution of research studies and experiments. You will apply subject matter expertise across the research data lifecycle, ensuring methodologies are robust and aligned with project goals.

Systems and Code Management

  • Act as the technical lead for research tools by developing and maintaining websites or applications. This includes troubleshooting source code (R or Python) and resolving complex issues within analytics or web environments.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Conduct comprehensive literature reviews and draft high-quality research documentation. You will translate complex data into clear reports, graphs, and presentations to communicate outcomes at various stages of the research cycle.

About You  

  • Degree in Data Science, Computer Science, or a related field (or equivalent experience). This is backed by a strong proficiency in R or Python and a practical understanding of technical research methodologies.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver technical training or workshops. You can translate complex data science concepts into accessible learning opportunities for researchers with varying levels of expertise.

  • Methodical approach to troubleshooting source code and maintaining digital applications. You possess the technical agility to work independently on routine procedures while ensuring data integrity.

  • Exceptional interpersonal and written communication skills. You are a self-motivated team player who can collaborate effectively with senior staff and academic stakeholders to drive research outcomes.

You must maintain unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of this appointment, and may be required to complete background checks including, criminal history and education checks. Employer sponsored work rights are not available for this appointment.
