The Salvation Army (Salvos) is one of Australia’s largest providers of alcohol and other drug (AOD) programs including withdrawal management, residential and non-residential rehabilitation, and harm reduction programs. Salvos services go beyond addressing the core issues and challenges associated with problematic substance abuse and provide participants a place of hope, compassion, and dignity to recover safely.

About the role

We are seeking a values-driven and proactive Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Support Worker to provide effective support to Participants ensuring a safe and structured environment is maintained in accordance with TSA guidelines, within a Participant lead recovery-based service.

This is a part time (4 days a week) position based in Surry Hills, Sydney, NSW. Salary and conditions are in accordance with SCHADS Level 3.

How will you make an impact

  • Provide safe and welcoming environment; ensure participant needs are met and rights upheld; implement risk management plans and make decisions consistent with TSA policies.
  • Facilitate daily programs fostering skills in daily living, community tasks, health & wellbeing, communication, education, recreation, and managing difficult emotions.
  • Support participant self-determination, safety, and stability using recovery-oriented, person-centred, strengths-based, and trauma-informed practice; collaborate with staff to achieve case plan goals.
  • Assist participants to access community supports; develop and communicate activity risk assessments and mitigation strategies.
  • Monitor participant safety and activities; maintain accurate records and case notes; identify and report risks, hazards, and incidents.
  • Supervise medication self-administration; administer drug testing; perform other tasks including light cleaning, room preparation, and transport.
  • Identify service gaps and recommend improvements.

What you will bring

  • Minimum Certificate 4 qualification relevant to the work performed and or equivalent previous experience in relevant industry, and/or on the job training
  • A current and valid First Aid Certificate
  • A current NSW drivers’ licence
  • Experience working with people with AOD and Co-occurring issues
  • AOD Certificate 4 Core unit AOD Skill set or willingness to undertake if required
